Elon Musk’s Terafab project is taking shape as an enormous semiconductor manufacturing campus in Grimes County, Texas. The plans make it one of the largest industrial facilities ever built.

SpaceX and Tesla say the planned complex will span about 100 million square feet and eventually produce enough computing capacity to exceed 1 terawatt annually. The first phase is expected to represent more than $16.8 billion in capital investment.

Terafab Will be Huge Complex

It is estimated it will create about 3,000 jobs, according to project and state information.

The scale is difficult to put into perspective. The planned Terafab footprint is roughly 10 times the size of Tesla's approximately 10-million-square-foot Gigafactory Texas.

The Terafab website describes the project as a vertically integrated manufacturing operation designed to combine chip production, memory, advanced packaging and testing in one location.

Musk has described the undertaking as an effort to close the gap between current semiconductor production, and the enormous computing demands he expects from artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous vehicles and future space-based computing.

What Is a Semiconductor?

A semiconductor is a material that has electrical properties between those of a conductor, such as copper, and an insulator.

Silicon is the most widely recognized semiconductor material and is fundamental to modern electronics, including computers, smartphones, automobiles, communications equipment and solar technology.

Semiconductors become especially important when they are engineered into integrated circuits, commonly called chips or microchips. These devices contain extremely small electronic components that can control the flow of electricity and perform calculations, store information or communicate with other systems.

Manufacturing those chips is an extraordinarily complicated process. A typical semiconductor supply chain can involve design, specialized manufacturing equipment, wafer fabrication, assembly, testing and packaging. The process can involve multiple companies and countries before a finished chip reaches a customer.

Terafab is intended to bring many of those stages together.

How Terafab Is Designed to Work

Traditional semiconductor production can be divided among specialized companies. One company might design a processor, another could manufacture the silicon wafers, while another handles assembly, testing and advanced packaging.

Terafab is designed around a different model.

The project is described as a vertically integrated semiconductor operation, meaning multiple critical stages of production would take place at the same campus.

The Texas Comptroller's documentation for the project includes fabrication facilities and clean rooms, supporting offices, logistics buildings, utility infrastructure, water-treatment and recycling facilities, industrial-waste treatment and on-site power generation.

Terafab manufactures Silicon Wafers or Chips

Inside a semiconductor fabrication facility, or "fab," highly controlled clean rooms are used to manufacture chips on silicon wafers. The wafers go through repeated processes that create microscopic layers and electronic structures.

Sophisticated equipment is used to pattern those structures, alter the material properties of selected areas and create the circuitry that eventually becomes a functioning processor or memory device.

After fabrication, chips can undergo packaging and testing. Packaging protects the delicate semiconductor and provides the physical connections needed for it to communicate with the rest of an electronic system.

By combining these operations, Terafab could give Musk's companies greater control over the semiconductor supply chain while potentially shortening the time between chip development, manufacturing and deployment.

Chips for Tesla, SpaceX and Artificial Intelligence

The intended customers inside Musk's corporate ecosystem are significant.

Tesla needs increasingly powerful processors for autonomous driving systems, artificial intelligence and Optimus humanoid robots. SpaceX is pursuing increasingly sophisticated computing capabilities for spacecraft and other infrastructure, while Musk's broader AI ambitions require enormous amounts of processing power.

Terafab's website says the facility is being designed for production at "terawatt scale" and identifies applications ranging from Tesla's AI systems to space-based computing.

The website also presents the project as part of a much larger infrastructure vision involving robotics, solar power and launching large quantities of equipment into orbit.

The 1-terawatt figure refers to computing capacity rather than the amount of electricity the factory itself will consume.

A terawatt equals 1 trillion watts, making the figure a way of expressing the enormous computational scale Musk's companies believe they will eventually require.

Texas Embraces the Terafab Investment

The project also represents another major expansion of Musk's industrial presence in Texas.

SpaceX has established major operations in the state, while Tesla operates its Gigafactory Texas near Austin. Terafab would add semiconductor manufacturing to that footprint and further establish Texas as a center for advanced technology and chip production.

Texas already has a growing semiconductor sector, and the state has used economic incentives to attract advanced manufacturing projects. The Texas Enterprise Fund, for example, provides performance-based grants for projects involving substantial capital investment and job creation when a Texas location is competing with an out-of-state alternative.

Texas Awards Musk 17.3 million in Grants

The Terafab project also has applications under the state's Jobs, Energy, Technology and Innovation, or JETI, program. Texas Comptroller records show multiple Terafab applications involving the Anderson-Shiro Independent School District.

The project comes as Texas continues positioning itself as a major semiconductor manufacturing and research hub. In 2025, Abbott announced a $17.3 million Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund grant for a SpaceX semiconductor research and advanced-packaging expansion in Bastrop.

Betting on the Future of AI

Terafab is ultimately a bet that the demand for advanced computer chips will grow dramatically as artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, humanoid robots and space-based computing develop.

The $16.8 billion first phase is only the beginning of a project whose proposed final footprint would dwarf conventional semiconductor facilities.

Building and operating such a complex would require enormous amounts of capital, specialized equipment, engineering expertise, energy, water and highly skilled labor.

For Musk, however, Terafab is about more than manufacturing chips. It represents an attempt to control a critical part of the technology supply chain needed to turn ambitious AI, robotics and space projects into physical products.

If the project reaches its planned scale, Terafab could become a defining example of the increasingly close relationship between semiconductor manufacturing and the future of artificial intelligence.
