What happened in the dark lanes of North Devon nearly sixty years ago has never been satisfactorily explained — not to the two men who were there, not to the Parliament that debated it, and not, as a flood of newly released government documents now makes clear, to anyone with genuine authority over the skies above us.

It was just after 4 a.m. on a bitterly cold October morning when Police Constables Roger Willey and Clifford Waycott, on routine patrol along the A3072 between Holsworthy and Hatherleigh, noticed something deeply wrong with the sky above the Devon treeline. It was not an aircraft. It was not a helicopter. It was not anything they had a word for.

"It looked like a star-spangled cross radiating points of light from all angles," Constable Willey would later tell the press, his description carrying the precise, unembellished quality of a trained observer. The object hung above the trees, pulsing, enormous — close enough that the officers stepped out of their patrol car into the freezing pre-dawn air to get a better look. Then it moved.

What followed was one of the most remarkable police pursuits in British history — not of a criminal, but of a light in the sky. The two constables drove at speeds approaching 90 miles per hour through winding Devon country lanes, never able to close the distance to less than 400 metres. The object, they later reported, seemed aware of them — holding a deliberate lead, as if playing a game.

The chase lasted roughly fifty minutes and covered fourteen miles. At 4:23 a.m., a second object appeared, identical in shape — a cross formation, brilliant and silent. Both disappeared to the east-northeast, swallowed by the dawn horizon. A passing motorist, Christopher Garner, had also seen the light. When officers found his Land Rover parked in a layby and woke him, he said he had thought he was in the middle of a nightmare.

02 - Two BBC engineers at North Hessary Tor transmitting station, Peter Walker and Peter Crook, reported identical phenomena from the Tavistock area.

03 - October 25: Five East Sussex police cars across five separate locations reported a bright flying cross in the early hours — one day later.

04 - October 26: Former BOAC administrator Angus Brooks, ex-RAF background, witnessed a translucent disc with cross-shaped appendages on Moigns Down, Dorset. It hovered for twenty-two minutes.

05 - October 27: Two more constables in Stalybridge, Cheshire, and a third officer in Glossop reported an identical cross-shaped object — all independently, minutes apart.

The RAF station at Chivenor was contacted. They denied the object had anything to do with their operations and stated, pointedly, that they were aware of no aircraft capable of hovering for extended periods and achieving supersonic speed. Ministry of Defence investigators arrived. The constables were interviewed under the Official Secrets Act. Results were classified.
