The Epstein Showdown That Destroyed Nancy Mace’s Political Future

She called it a spiritual battle. The voters called it over.

In one of the most stunning political defeats of the 2026 election cycle, South Carolina Congresswoman Nancy Mace crashed out of the Republican gubernatorial primary Tuesday night, finishing a humiliating fifth place with barely 12 percent of the vote. The woman who once promised to "drag truth into the sunlight and flip the tables" was, instead, flipped herself.

"I voted to release the Epstein files and lost some support for that. As a survivor, I chose to stand on principle and stand against the Epstein cover-up. And apparently, I chose wrong if the goal was winning an election."

The concession was extraordinary. Not just a political defeat. A public reckoning.

Principle Meets the Brutal Math of Endorsements

The machinery of defeat had been months in the making. When Mace joined a bipartisan discharge petition in the summer of 2025 to force a floor vote on the Epstein Files Transparency Act, forcing the Department of Justice to publish documents related to convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, the move was characterized as an open defiance of the president's wishes.

The price was immediate and devastating. Trump endorsed Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette by late May, following an earlier endorsement from term-limited Gov. Henry McMaster in February. With that single act, Mace's path to the governorship effectively collapsed.

She spearheaded a House Oversight Committee effort to call then-Attorney General Pam Bondi to testify before Congress about the release of the Epstein files. In a state where Trump's word functions as political gospel, demanding accountability from inside his own administration was not a winning play.

The Night the Numbers Told the Story

The Associated Press called the race just after 9 p.m. EDT, with Trump-endorsed Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette leading with 29.3 percent and Attorney General Alan Wilson at 26.2 percent, the two advancing to a runoff on June 23. Yahoo!

Mace did not wait for the final count. She conceded before 9 p.m., before the race was even formally called, as it became clear she faced an insurmountable deficit. It was the political equivalent of leaving the courtroom before the verdict. She knew.

With 65 percent of votes counted at the time of her concession, Mace was polling in last place with just 11.6 percent of the vote. Fifth place. A complete electoral collapse for a three-term congresswoman with a massive national profile who had built her entire campaign on the promise of fearless, table-flipping disruption.

A Calculated Defiance That Backfired

From the start, Mace framed her campaign as a crusade. She launched her gubernatorial bid at her alma mater, The Citadel, positioning herself as the antidote to what she called "weak leadership" and "empty suits" in state government.

But the Epstein files became the fault line that divided everything.

Addressing her supporters on election night, Mace told the crowd she believes she lost the race precisely when she chose to go against her own party and call for the release of the Epstein files, noting she was one of very few Republicans in Congress to do so.

In her testimony to the watching crowd, she framed the contest in near-apocalyptic terms. She called the election a "spiritual battle" between those who "protect predators" and those who will "fight against them and put them in jail."

The language of a whistleblower. The result of a losing candidate.

The Defiant Exit That Stunned the Party

Even in defeat, Mace refused to play along. Rather than endorse Trump's chosen candidate Pamela Evette for the June 23 runoff, Mace endorsed rival Attorney General Alan Wilson, openly siding against the president's pick. DNYUZ

In her concession address, Mace declared Wilson would "mop the floor with Pamela Evette," expressing full confidence in the candidate who stands in direct opposition to the Trump-backed frontrunner.

It was one final act of defiance in a campaign built entirely on them.

A Warning Shot Across the Entire GOP

The shockwaves from South Carolina are reverberating across Republican circles tonight. The verdict is clear: in the current political climate, crossing the president on Epstein transparency is a classified electoral liability.

Mace had been one of the most outspoken Republican advocates for releasing the Epstein files, and her devastating fifth-place finish sends an unmistakable signal to other GOP lawmakers watching the returns.

For now, the Republican nominee in the runoff will be heavily favored to win in November in a deep-red state where the GOP has controlled the governor's mansion since 2003. The institutional machinery rolls forward. Mace's political future, however, is now an open question.

She says this isn't the end of the fight. Just the end of this chapter.

South Carolina may have already turned the page.
