In an early morning fire in NYC Lower East Side, a horrific scene unfolded, claiming the lives of four individuals and leaving several others injured. The fire broke out in a local e-bike repair shop situated on the ground floor of a six-story residential building, according to officials.

Responding to a 911 call placed at around 12:15 a.m., fire officials found themselves facing an inferno of epic proportions within the HQ Ebike Repair shop. This was not your average slow-burning fire. It was akin to a sudden explosion, fueled by highly volatile lithium-ion batteries commonly found in e-bikes and e-scooters, exacerbating the fire's burstiness.

Quick Response from FDNY Despite the Difficult Circumstances

"A mammoth flame was ripping through the gate when I first spotted it," recounted an eyewitness, a nearby deli owner.

Within a ten-minute span, FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief John Sarrocco and his team were on the scene, embarking on a battle against the flames that seemed to gain strength with each passing moment.

Despite their efforts, the fire in NYC intensified, generating thick, choking smoke that permeated the entire structure, adding an additional layer of complexity to the situation.

In the immediate aftermath of the fire, four individuals, including a 71-year-old man, lost their lives.

Two of the deceased were men, and the remaining were women.

Initially, six individuals were listed in critical condition, with one other resident treated and released at the scene.

A firefighter and an EMT also sustained minor injuries in their heroic efforts to control the situation.

Investigation Underway as Lithium-ion Batteries Raise Concerns

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

However, experts have long cautioned about the potential fire risk associated with lithium-ion batteries found in e-bikes and e-scooters.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, these batteries can catch fire "with some regularity" and are even known to cause explosions.

 Residents Rescued Amid the Mayhem

While firefighters fought the fire, they pulled numerous residents from the building and evacuated a large number of e-bikes and scooters from the shop, a clear indication of the potential danger these vehicles could pose when subjected to fire.
