Travis Kelce Chiefs Training Camp Grind Has Andy Reid Pulling the Reins

Most 36-year-olds in the NFL are counting down the days to retirement, easing off the gas as their bodies demand more recovery than reps. Travis Kelce apparently didn't get that memo. As the Kansas City Chiefs wrapped up their 2026 training camp Thursday, head coach Andy Reid revealed he's had to physically pull his star tight end off the practice field — not because Kelce was slacking, but because he refused to stop.

A Coach Marveling at His Oldest Player

Speaking to reporters as camp concluded on Aug. 20, Reid, 68, painted a picture of a veteran who treats every practice like a job interview rather than a formality built on reputation. "You have examples like Kelce, he's the oldest guy on the team and came out every day and worked to where you had to yank him out of there to give him a breather," Reid told reporters — the kind of admission that flips the usual aging-athlete narrative on its head entirely.

Teammates Take Notice

Kelce's work ethic didn't go unnoticed by his younger teammates, either. Linebacker Nick Bolton, 26, offered his own take after camp wrapped, framing Kelce's effort as a standard-setter for the rest of the roster. "There's no excuses when you have the old guy out there running routes and stuff like that," Bolton said, adding that it's "been fun to watch [Kelce] work" — essentially crediting the future Hall of Famer with raising the bar simply by refusing to lower his own.

Praise Extends to Mahomes' Recovery

Kelce wasn't the only Chiefs star drawing praise from his head coach. Reid also singled out quarterback Patrick Mahomes for his progress rehabbing a torn ACL, commending him for "doing what he did with his knee" throughout the recovery process. Reflecting on the broader camp, Reid struck an optimistic tone: "They worked hard, and I appreciated that. I thought we made progress."

Kelce's Push to Lead Differently This Season

Kelce's on-field intensity appears tied to a broader personal goal he outlined earlier this month. During an Aug. 12 press conference, he spoke candidly about wanting to become a "better leader" heading into this season, framing leadership as something proven in the toughest moments rather than claimed through title alone. "When we get stuck, with adversity hitting, who's going to want you in that foxhole with you? That's one of those things, I want to be one of those guys that everybody counts on to be there and get us out of that foxhole," Kelce told reporters.

Learning From Last Season's Letdown

Kelce didn't shy away from acknowledging where he fell short during the Chiefs' disappointing finish to their 2025 campaign. "There were things I could have done better in that regard," he admitted, before pivoting to this season's fresh start. "I feel ready to rock and roll. Just trying to make sure I set that example for the guys around me, that this is the standard" — a mission statement that seems to align directly with the tireless camp performance Reid described.

What's Next for Kansas City

With training camp now in the rearview mirror, the Chiefs still have two preseason tune-ups left on the schedule, facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers first and the Seattle Seahawks next. The regular season kicks off Sept. 14, when Kansas City hosts the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium — the first real test of whether this camp's grind translates into results that matter.
