Tropical Storm Lala in Hawaii: Islands Brace for a Weekend of Wind, Rain and Rising Surf

Tropical Storm Lala in Hawaii

Hawaii's calm summer skies are about to get a violent shake-up. A cluster of storms churning some 800 miles southeast of the Big Island has organized into Tropical Storm Lala, and forecasters say the islands now face a race against the clock to prepare before it arrives.

From Scattered Storms to a Named Threat

The system strengthened into Tropical Storm Lala early Thursday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center, transforming what had been a loose collection of showers and thunderstorms into a defined, trackable threat. Eastern Hawaii is already under a hurricane watch through Friday afternoon — meaning hurricane-force conditions could materialize within the next 36 hours. Forecasters expect Lala to approach hurricane strength itself, with sustained winds nearing 70 mph in the coming days.

An Uncertain Path, A Familiar Danger

Exactly where Lala goes — and how strong it gets there — remains something of a moving target. On its current forecast track, the storm would thread the needle and avoid the rare feat of an actual Hawaiian landfall, passing near the Big Island Saturday before sliding south of the smaller islands Sunday. Meteorologists say the picture should sharpen as the storm becomes more organized closer to the weekend, the way a blurry photo snaps into focus once the camera locks on.

Why a Near-Miss Can Still Hit Hard

History offers a stark reminder here: landfalls in Hawaii are exceedingly rare. The last one was Tropical Storm Olivia in 2018, which came ashore on Maui — the island's first documented landfall since record-keeping began in the 1950s. But a storm doesn't need to make landfall to cause landfall-level damage. When a system's winds and its track line up in the same direction, they can act like two hands pushing the same door, amplifying the water and wind driven onto shore.

Hurricane Hone demonstrated exactly that in 2024, passing just 50 miles south of the Big Island yet still generating waves as tall as 18 feet and dumping more than 20 inches of rain.

Rain: The Storm's Sharpest Edge

As Lala pushes westward, rainfall — not wind — is shaping up to be its most dangerous weapon, particularly on the Big Island, where forecasters have higher confidence in significant impacts. Maui could see more than 8 inches of rain, while the Big Island may face well over a foot through Sunday. The worst totals are expected on the islands' eastern slopes, where mountainous terrain acts like a sponge being wrung out — forcing moist air upward until it squeezes out heavy, relentless rain.

A Rolling Timeline Across the Islands

The rain will arrive island by island, not all at once. The Big Island gets the first taste starting Friday, with the wet weather spreading to Maui on Saturday and reaching Lanai, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai by Sunday. The National Hurricane Center has issued warnings of life-threatening flooding and mudslides, particularly across steep terrain where water has nowhere to go but down — fast.

Wind and Waves Add to the Risk

Lala is forecast to climb just shy of hurricane strength, with sustained winds around 70 mph. The Big Island faces the greatest exposure to those winds, since the storm's center is expected to track just south of it. Winds at that intensity are strong enough to snap trees and topple power lines, a danger compounded by rain-soaked soil that loosens root systems and makes trees far easier to knock down. Surf is also expected to build as the storm nears, with waves potentially topping 10 feet — though the exact timing and height remain uncertain.

Officials Urge Preparation, Not Panic

"This is the time to prepare, not panic," Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said, as state officials encouraged residents to stock emergency supplies, review family safety plans, and stay tuned to updates in the days ahead.

The Bigger Picture: A Season Primed for Storms

Lala isn't arriving in a vacuum. A developing Super El Niño is helping supercharge storm potential across the central Pacific this year, with warmer ocean waters and weaker storm-suppressing upper-level winds creating more favorable conditions for tropical systems to form and intensify. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has forecast an above-average central Pacific season, projecting between five and 13 tropical cyclones before it's through.
