Trump Faces Fuel Price Threat as U.S. Oil Stockpiles Rapidly Shrink

America’s fuel markets are sending a dangerous warning and it could soon hit drivers, businesses and the global economy all at once. While President Donald Trump has repeatedly insisted gasoline prices will “drop like a rock” once the Iran conflict ends, a far more alarming reality is unfolding behind the scenes: U.S. reserves of crude oil, gasoline and diesel are collapsing at a pace that is rattling energy markets worldwide.

The consequences could stretch far beyond pain at the pump.

More than 13 million barrels per day of crude oil and refined fuels were wiped off global markets after the Strait of Hormuz was nearly shut down when war erupted on February 28. That amounts to roughly 13% of the world’s energy supply, a shockwave powerful enough to disrupt economies across continents.

The fallout has been immediate and severe.

Countries have scrambled to impose energy-saving measures. Refiners have cut output. Airlines have canceled thousands of flights as fuel costs surged higher and higher.

Global benchmark Brent crude futures, now trading more than 40% above pre-war levels at over $100 a barrel, have dominated headlines. But the deeper crisis may be unfolding in the refined fuel market, where shortages are becoming increasingly acute.

European diesel prices exploded to a record $205 a barrel on April 7 and remain near $160, still roughly 60% above levels seen before the conflict began. The surge reflects a market under intense strain and a world desperate for fuel supplies.

America’s Refiners Become the World’s Lifeline

The global squeeze has created a massive windfall for refiners, especially along the U.S. Gulf Coast, now one of the most critical export hubs on the planet.

Faced with soaring international demand and extraordinary profit incentives, U.S. refiners dramatically increased production after the war began.

Jet fuel output has surged 18% since late February. Gasoline and diesel production have each climbed more than 2%, according to Energy Information Administration data.

At the same time, U.S. crude and fuel exports have exploded.

Exports reached a record of more than 14 million barrels per day during the week ending April 24, helping desperately fuel-starved economies in Europe and Asia stay afloat. But that rescue effort is draining America’s own reserves at an alarming speed.

“Nothing Is Normal This Year”

The aggressive export boom has triggered what analysts describe as a dangerously counter-cyclical drawdown in domestic inventories, leaving the United States increasingly vulnerable heading into summer and winter demand peaks.

Under normal circumstances, refiners spend spring and summer building gasoline stockpiles ahead of America’s busy driving season. Distillate fuels like diesel and heating oil are also typically replenished before harvest season and winter heating demand arrive.

This year, those stockpiles are vanishing instead.

U.S. distillate inventories, including diesel and heating oil, have fallen to their lowest level since 2005. Current levels sit about 20% below the 10-year average for this time of year, according to EIA data.

If the current pace continues, the United States and much of the global economy could enter winter with dangerously thin fuel cushions, leaving markets exposed to another supply shock.

Jet fuel markets are also flashing warning signs.

Despite aviation fuel output running roughly 30% above its 10-year average at around 2 million barrels per day, exports surged to a record 320,000 barrels per day during March and April, according to Kpler data. That leaves little room for additional disruptions if global demand spikes again.

Gasoline Could Become the Biggest Political Threat

The most explosive risk may be gasoline.

The United States remains the world’s largest gasoline consumer, accounting for about 8% of global demand. Yet refiners have increasingly shifted toward producing jet fuel and diesel, products now urgently needed overseas, particularly in Europe and Asia.

That pivot is squeezing gasoline supplies at home.

At the same time, gasoline imports into the U.S. East Coast nearly collapsed in April, falling by almost half compared to a year earlier as worldwide supply tightened.

The result is a stunning depletion in U.S. gasoline inventories.

Stocks have dropped over the past 11 weeks far faster than seasonal norms. Analysts at Morgan Stanley now expect gasoline inventories to plunge below 200 million barrels by the end of August, a level never recorded for that month in the modern era.

A Mounting Crisis for Trump

The economic and political risks are growing harder to ignore.

Soaring global energy prices and booming exports have already pushed average U.S. gasoline prices to $4.30 a gallon, according to EIA data. That is more than 40% higher than a year ago and could become a major liability for Trump heading into November’s midterm elections.

The pressure may only intensify.

Domestic gasoline consumption is still running slightly above last year’s levels, meaning prices could continue climbing as peak summer travel collides with historically low inventories. Analysts warn elevated fuel prices may persist well beyond September as refiners struggle to rebuild depleted reserves.

That leaves the Trump administration facing a painful dilemma.

To contain rising prices before voters head to the polls, officials could consider restricting fuel exports. But such a move could ignite another surge in global fuel prices and damage America’s reputation as a dependable supplier during an international energy crisis.

It could also backfire domestically.

Limiting exports would likely crush refinery profit margins, forcing refiners to scale back operations and potentially worsening shortages both in the U.S. and abroad.

America’s Energy Dominance Becomes a Double-Edged Sword

The Iran war has transformed America’s energy power into a growing vulnerability.

By flooding allies and international markets with exports during a global supply emergency, the United States has helped stabilize economies around the world. But the strategy is now exposing American consumers to soaring costs, shrinking fuel reserves and the threat of prolonged shortages.

For millions of drivers already paying sharply higher prices, the economic pain is becoming impossible to ignore.

And for Trump, the political price of this energy crisis may ultimately arrive in November.
