Former President Donald Trump lashed out at the Wall Street Journal on Thursday, threatening to sue the publication and its owner, Rupert Murdoch, over a bombshell article that claimed Trump sent a racy birthday letter to Jeffrey Epstein.

 In a fiery social media post, Trump called the story “false, malicious, and defamatory,” and ordered Attorney General Pam Bondi to seek court approval to unseal grand jury testimony related to Epstein’s criminal case.

“President Trump has already beaten George Stephanopoulos/ABC, 60 Minutes/CBS, and others, and looks forward to suing and holding accountable the once great Wall Street Journal,” Trump wrote.

Leavitt, Vance Denounce Wall Street Journal Report

The Journal report cited anonymous sources and alleged that Trump had a flirtatious relationship with Epstein, including sending him a lewd birthday card.

According to Trump, both he and White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt warned the Journal’s editor-in-chief, Emma Tucker, that the story was fake. Leavitt called it a “hatchet job article” and said the publication “refused to show us the letter and conceded they don’t even have it in their possession.”

Vice President JD Vance joined the backlash, writing on X (formerly Twitter) that the story was “complete and utter bullshit,” echoing Trump’s characterization of the broader Epstein media narrative this week.

Trump Orders Bondi to Unseal Epstein Grand Jury Transcripts

Shortly after denouncing the Journal, Trump directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to unseal any “pertinent” grand jury testimony related to Epstein, subject to court approval.

“This SCAM, perpetuated by the Democrats, should end, right now!” Trump posted.

Within minutes, Bondi responded, stating: “We are ready to move the court tomorrow to unseal the grand jury transcripts.”

Legal experts and lawmakers point out that unsealing grand jury materials is an uphill battle. Grand jury secrecy is tightly protected, especially in sensitive cases involving living victims and ongoing appeals, such as Ghislaine Maxwell’s.

Murdoch Ties and Media Lawsuits

The lawsuit threat underscores Trump’s deteriorating relationship with Murdoch’s media empire, which includes the Wall Street Journal, New York Post, and Fox News.

Although Murdoch’s outlets were once considered Trump-friendly, their relationship has cooled, particularly as Trump lashes out at critical coverage.

This latest threat follows recent settlements Trump secured from other media giants:

• A $15 million settlement from ABC News over the George Stephanopoulos defamation case (Politico report)
• A $16 million deal with CBS News/Paramount earlier this month (Politico report)

Trump has also pursued action against the Associated Press and banned its reporters from the Oval Office over past disputes.

Epstein Saga Continues to Shadow Washington

The new Wall Street Journal report comes amid renewed public interest in the Epstein case. The Department of Justice and the FBI recently released a long-awaited memo concluding there was no evidence Epstein was murdered or that a “client list” existed (Axios report).

Still, Trump allies, including Speaker Mike Johnson, Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene, and conservative activist Laura Loomer, have called for more transparency. Meanwhile, Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) emphasized on X that grand jury transcripts would offer only a narrow view of the evidence.

“Grand jury testimony will largely relate only to Epstein and Maxwell and exclude videos, photographs, and FBI witness interviews,” Goldman warned.

As Trump heads into another heated election cycle, his war against the media—and his entanglement in the Epstein controversy—are once again front and center.
