Trump’s criticism of Pope Leo fuels political and religious clash in Washington

Trump's criticism of Pope Leo

A simmering dispute between the White House and the Vatican intensified Wednesday, as House Speaker Mike Johnson signaled support for President Donald Trump amid growing fallout from Trump’s criticism of Pope Leo.

Speaking to reporters at the Capitol, Johnson struck a careful tone, defending both religious freedom and political rebuttal in equal measure. While acknowledging the pope’s right to speak on global affairs, he suggested that stepping into political territory invites pushback.

“I’m not one to criticize clerics and religious leaders,” Johnson said, framing his remarks like a tightrope walk between reverence and realism. “But when anyone wades into political waters, they should expect a political response.”

A widening rift over war and morality

The dispute has deepened in recent days as Pope Leo XIV voiced criticism of the U.S.-Israel war in Iran, prompting a sharp counterattack from Trump. The president accused the pontiff of undermining foreign policy, likening his comments to a compass spinning wildly in a storm.

In a pointed social media message Tuesday, Trump urged critics to confront what he described as Iran’s deadly crackdown on protesters, claiming tens of thousands of unarmed civilians had been killed in recent months. He warned that allowing Iran to obtain nuclear weapons would be “absolutely unacceptable,” doubling down on his stance without apology.

Vice President JD Vance, the highest-ranking Catholic in U.S. elected office, also stepped into the fray. He cautioned the pope to tread carefully when discussing theology, adding another layer of tension to an already charged exchange.

Pope Leo’s call for peace meets political resistance

Despite the mounting criticism, Pope Leo — the first American pontiff and a member of the Order of St. Augustine — has avoided direct confrontation with Trump. Instead, he has consistently called for peace, urging world leaders to seek diplomatic solutions to the conflict.

Drawing on the teachings of St. Augustine, Leo has referenced the concept of a “just war,” a doctrine that examines the moral legitimacy of armed conflict. In his Easter address, he delivered a stark message: prayers from those with “blood on their hands” go unheard — a statement that Johnson admitted left him unsettled.

“I was taken a little bit aback,” Johnson said, reflecting on the remark, which landed like a thunderclap in an already stormy debate.

Intelligence, faith, and the weight of decisions

Johnson defended the administration’s perspective, pointing to classified intelligence briefings that, he suggested, reveal the gravity of the situation.

“There’s a time to every purpose under heaven,” he said, invoking scripture to underscore the complexity of leadership decisions. He argued that both Trump and Vance are guided by a deep understanding of the stakes — knowledge shaped behind closed doors in high-security briefings.

A delicate balance between respect and rebuttal

The speaker’s remarks came just one day after he reportedly urged Trump to remove an AI-generated image depicting himself in a Christ-like pose — a request the president ultimately honored. Trump later downplayed the controversy, saying he believed the image portrayed him as a doctor.

Still, Johnson emphasized his reluctance to escalate tensions into a theological dispute.

“I certainly respect the pope,” he said, choosing his words with care. “These are matters that people of good faith can debate.”

In a political landscape already fraught with division, the clash between Washington and the Vatican now unfolds like a high-stakes chess match — each move echoing far beyond the board.
