Former NBA champion J.R. Smith is sitting in a Texas jail.

Hunt County arrest records show the 41-year-old, legally named Joseph Earl Smith, was arrested Tuesday, Sept. 29, and booked on a charge of assault causing bodily injury family violence. No bond has been set. He remains in custody at the Hunt County Detention Center.

That's the whole paper trail so far. It isn't much.

The records don't name an alleged victim, and they don't say what happened, where or when. Until that changes, this is an arrest and an allegation. Smith hasn't been convicted of anything.

The label matters, though. Family violence in a Texas charge ties the allegation to a relationship, such as a family member, household member or dating partner, and that designation can follow a defendant into later cases. Assault causing bodily injury is typically filed as a Class A misdemeanor, which carries up to a year in jail. A prior family violence conviction or certain alleged conduct can push it into felony territory. The records available don't say which level applies here.

Smith's basketball résumé is hard to argue with. He won two championships alongside LeBron James, the first in 2016 with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the second in 2020 with the Los Angeles Lakers. He retired after that season. In 2021, he enrolled at North Carolina A&T State University and graduated with a degree in Liberal Studies-Applied Cultural Thought. It made a tidy second act.

The public record has other chapters.

One dates to 2009, when Smith was behind the wheel in a car accident that killed his friend. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail, according to Yahoo Sports. In 2020, a video shared by TMZ Sports showed him punching and kicking an unidentified man on the ground in a Los Angeles residential neighborhood. Smith told TMZ the man had damaged his truck's windows, and the outlet reported the incident happened near the looted Flight Club sneaker shop. "This ain't no hate crime," Smith said at the time.

Neither episode is this case. A fatal crash and a street fight are different in kind from a family violence charge, and nothing in the records links them. They're public, though, and they'll shape how closely this arrest gets watched. That's a fact about attention, not evidence.

The next things to watch are a bond decision, a first court appearance and whether Smith's side speaks. Hunt County's paperwork will say more than speculation will.
