Uber Slashes 3,300 Jobs As Sweeping Restructuring Targets Managers and Remote Work

Inside the Corporate Shake-Up

  1. Uber is eliminating approximately 3,300 positions, representing about 10% of its global workforce.
  2. Management ranks will shrink as the company dismantles layers and consolidates fragmented teams.
  3. Remote work will be restricted to roughly 1% of employees as Uber concentrates operations around major offices.

Uber is cutting approximately 3,300 jobs in its largest workforce reduction since the COVID-19 pandemic, launching a company-wide restructuring that will eliminate management layers, consolidate major business units, and bring most remote employees back within commuting distance of an office.

The cuts represent roughly 10% of Uber’s global workforce and are intended to make the ride-sharing giant faster, less fragmented, and better positioned to invest in delivery services and autonomous vehicles.

In a companywide message released Wednesday, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi acknowledged that Uber’s rapid growth had created an increasingly complicated corporate structure.

“More layers, more coordination, more fragmented ownership,” had slowed the company, Khosrowshahi told employees, explaining that some structures no longer worked at Uber’s present scale.

The restructuring will reduce management ranks by approximately 20%. Some affected managers will move into individual-contributor positions, while other managerial and non-managerial employees will leave the company.

Uber is also targeting “micro-teams” consisting of managers with only one or two direct reports. The company said it has cut the number of those teams by nearly half and reduced by 20% the number of employees positioned seven or more organizational levels below the CEO.

The changes are designed to establish clearer ownership, accelerate decisions, and redirect employees away from internal coordination and toward product development and customer service.

Uber will combine its previously separate restaurant, retail, and direct-delivery operations under unified global, regional, and local leadership. The company is also merging its Core Services Engineering and Science teams.

According to Khosrowshahi, operating those delivery businesses separately made sense when they were smaller. At Uber’s current scale, however, the divided structure allegedly created duplication, overlapping responsibilities, and slower decision-making.

The consolidation will place profit-and-loss responsibility under fewer leaders, giving management greater authority to allocate capital across Uber’s expanding delivery network.

The overhaul also marks a dramatic retreat from remote work.

Uber will ask the overwhelming majority of its remote employees to relocate within commuting distance of an office. Going forward, only about 1% of the company’s workforce will remain eligible for fully remote employment.

The company will continue enforcing its hybrid policy requiring employees to report to an office three days each week. Global teams will be concentrated primarily in San Francisco and New York, while regional, local, and technology employees will be assigned to designated operational hubs.

Employees working in countries where layoffs require consultation, notice, or other legally mandated procedures will be processed under applicable local requirements, Uber said.

The layoffs arrive as Uber commits enormous resources to autonomous transportation. The company has pledged more than $10 billion toward partnerships and investments involving robotaxis, autonomous delivery systems, and electric vehicles.

Uber has directed capital toward companies including Avride, Lucid, Nuro, and Rivian as it prepares for a future in which autonomous vehicles could transform—and potentially threaten—its traditional ride-sharing model.

Uber shares climbed after the restructuring became public, signaling an initially favorable reaction from investors. Reuters described the reduction as the company’s largest round of layoffs since the pandemic.

The announcement follows an earlier reduction affecting 23% of Uber’s People and Places division, which oversees human resources, recruiting, workplace facilities, and company culture.

Although Uber is expanding its use of artificial intelligence in daily operations, Khosrowshahi did not identify AI as the reason for Wednesday’s layoffs. Instead, the company presented the cuts as a structural reset intended to concentrate authority, eliminate duplication, and free billions of dollars for its next era of growth.
