The world just got a new look, and Washington isn't happy about it.

The resolution, dubbed "Correct the Map," was spearheaded by African Union member states alongside the Bahamas, and it does exactly what its name suggests. It asks governments, schools, and tech companies to abandon the Mercator projection in favor of a map that reflects continents' actual relative sizes rather than the wildly skewed proportions cartographers have relied on since Gerardus Mercator drew his original chart in 1569.

For anyone who sat through a geography class staring at a wall map, the practical effect is jarring. Under Equal Earth, Africa balloons to a size that finally does justice to its 11.7 million square miles, while Greenland, long depicted as nearly the size of the entire African continent, shrinks down to its true, far more modest footprint. The United States, Russia, and China, all of which loom large on the traditional Mercator map, lose a good deal of their visual real estate as well.

That's precisely the point, according to the resolution's backers. Togo's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Robert Dussey, told reporters at the UN that a fair map doesn't rewrite geography so much as it rewrites perception. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, whose country co-sponsored the measure, went further, arguing the old map let the United States, Russia and China command disproportionate visual authority on the world stage while Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia were rendered smaller than life. France announced Friday it would drop the Mercator projection entirely, a move widely read as part of Paris's broader effort to mend relationships with former colonies across Africa.

Washington sees it differently, and its objection wasn't quiet. U.S. representative Yaryna Ferencevych told the Assembly ahead of the vote that debating 16th-century map projections, and their supposed ties to reparations and what she called "cognitive justice," was emblematic of an institution losing sight of its purpose. The message from the U.S. delegation was unambiguous: while much of the world sees this as a matter of accuracy and dignity, American officials framed it as a distraction dressed up in ideological language, and, by at least one account, dismissed it outright as a "radical ideological project."

The six countries that abstained rather than vote yes, Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine, notably did not join the U.S. in outright opposition, leaving America diplomatically isolated on the question in a way that will likely draw scrutiny regardless of one's view on cartography.

There's a legal and institutional dimension here worth flagging. UN General Assembly resolutions of this kind carry no binding force. No country is compelled to redraw its textbooks or swap out the map on its classroom wall. What the vote does carry is weight, the kind that shapes procurement decisions, educational curricula, and the products built by the tech companies whose mapping software millions of people use daily. Google Maps, for instance, already shifted to a 3D globe view on desktop back in 2018, though the flat Mercator view remains the default on most mobile apps. Watch for pressure to build on that front now that the UN has put its institutional stamp on the alternative.

The push itself isn't new. Advocacy groups Africa No Filter and Speak Up Africa have campaigned for years to retire the Mercator projection, arguing it has functioned, in their words, as one of history's most durable exercises in visual misinformation. The African Union formally endorsed the effort, tying it to a broader push for what it calls Africa's rightful place on the global stage amid ongoing conversations about colonial-era reparations.
