He thought he could disappear into Africa. He was wrong. In a late-night announcement that reverberated from Washington to Abuja, President Donald Trump declared Friday that American and Nigerian forces had executed a precisely coordinated joint operation to eliminate what he described as "the most active terrorist in the world" — Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, the man US officials identified as ISIS's second-in-command globally.

"Tonight, at my direction, brave American forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria flawlessly executed a meticulously planned and very complex mission," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Friday evening. "He will no longer terrorize the people of Africa, or help plan operations to target Americans."

The strike targeted a compound in the Lake Chad Basin, a sprawling, porous borderland where Niger, Chad, Cameroon, and Nigeria converge — and where militant networks have exploited ungoverned territory for years with near-impunity.

The Target: A Militant Who Survived His Own Death

The elimination of al-Minuki carries a layer of complexity that underscores just how difficult tracking senior militant commanders in the African Sahel has become. According to US Treasury Department documents, al-Minuki was born in 1982 in Borno State — Nigeria's northeastern corner, bordering Cameroon, Chad, and Niger — the same geographic theater where ISIS's West Africa affiliate, ISWAP, has waged a years-long insurgency.

He had long been a focal point of Nigeria's military operations. In 2024, Nigerian forces listed him among suspected ISWAP and Boko Haram commanders killed during operations in the Birnin Gwari forest area of Kaduna State in the country's north.

He was not dead.

On Sunday, Nigerian Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga addressed the discrepancy directly, acknowledging the earlier claim but describing it as "a case of mistaken identity or misattribution." Onanuga further noted that Birnin Gwari had never been within al-Minuki's established operational territory. "This time, however, security and military authorities maintain a far higher level of confidence," he said — a careful but pointed distinction between a past error and Friday's strike.

Months of Surveillance, One Decisive Moment

The operation did not happen overnight — it was the product of patient, methodical intelligence work spanning months. Daniel Bwala, a spokesperson for Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, confirmed to CNN that "the leader of this terrorist organization ISWAP had been under surveillance for some time," and that "when he was identified and located around Lake Chad, both the US and Nigerian government felt it was the right time to strike."

Trump, characteristically blunt, described the intelligence apparatus that tracked al-Minuki across the continent. "He thought he could hide in Africa," the president said, "but little did he know we had sources who kept us informed on what he was doing."

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth put the mission in stark operational terms. "US forces hunted this top ISIS leader in Nigeria who was killing Christians, and we killed him — and his entire posse," Hegseth said. He added that the operation demonstrated "the exceptional lethality, patience and skill of US forces, amplified alongside willing and capable partners, to address shared threats."

Nigeria Confirms the Strike — With a Caveat

Nigeria's State House confirmed the joint operation in a formal statement, describing it as "a daring joint operation that dealt a heavy blow to the ranks of the Islamic State." Early assessments confirmed the elimination of al-Minuki — also identified as Abu-Mainok — along with several of his lieutenants, the statement said.

Nigerian President Tinubu issued a statement Saturday morning thanking Trump for his leadership. "Nigeria appreciates this partnership with the United States in advancing our shared security objectives," Tinubu wrote. "I extend my sincere gratitude to President Trump for his leadership and unwavering support in this effort."

But amid the bilateral congratulations, Nigeria's government offered a pointed clarification on the political framing surrounding the operation. Bwala pushed back against Trump's repeated characterization of the conflict as a campaign of Christian persecution, stating firmly: "Nigeria still insists that there is no Christian genocide taking place in Nigeria." Terrorists, he emphasized, target people of "all faiths."

A Pattern of US Strikes in Nigeria

Friday's operation is not the first time Trump has ordered lethal action against ISIS-affiliated militants in Nigeria. In December, the president announced "a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS" in northwestern Nigeria, framing it explicitly as a response to attacks on Christian communities. A month before that, Trump had publicly contemplated broader military intervention following what he described as a "mass slaughter" of Christians by Islamist insurgents — a suggestion that drew sharp pushback from the Nigerian government, which rejected claims it was failing to protect its Christian citizens.

The political framing from Washington and the ground reality in Nigeria have rarely aligned cleanly. Experts and analysts consistently note that the country's security crisis is layered and multidimensional — shaped not only by religiously motivated extremist violence but by communal tensions, ethnic conflicts, and disputes between farming and herding communities over shrinking access to land and water. In Africa's most populous nation, home to an estimated 237.5 million people and roughly split between Christian and Muslim populations, both faiths have suffered under the violence of radical Islamist groups.

What the Strike Means for ISIS in Africa

Trump declared that with al-Minuki's removal, "ISIS's global operation is greatly diminished" — sweeping language that counterterrorism analysts will scrutinize carefully. ISWAP, the West Africa affiliate responsible for some of the region's most lethal attacks, has demonstrated resilience across years of military pressure, absorbing leadership losses and reconstituting its command structures with disturbing efficiency.

What Friday's strike unambiguously achieved is the elimination of a senior operational figure who had evaded capture — and reportedly death — for years, and who was actively directing militant activity across one of the world's most volatile regions. Whether his removal reshapes the battlefield or simply creates a vacancy that another commander will fill is a question that the Lake Chad Basin's brutal and complicated conflict may answer in the months ahead.
