US Begun B-52 Missions in Iran

The shift in aerial dominance has ushered in a new phase of the conflict, with the US Begun B-52 Missions in Iran marking a pivotal escalation in strategy and reach.

Overland Bombing Signals Tactical Shift

At a Tuesday briefing, Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, confirmed that U.S. forces have begun deploying B-52 Stratofortress bombers on overland missions across Iran.

“Over the past 30 days, we’ve struck more than 11,000 targets,” Caine said, underscoring the scale of operations. He added that increased air superiority has enabled these missions, allowing forces to press deeper into contested territory.

The move signals a dramatic shift. Once constrained by Iranian air defenses, U.S. and allied aircraft now operate with significantly greater freedom across the country’s skies.

Air Defenses Crippled in Early Campaign

In the opening stages of the conflict, U.S. and Israeli forces concentrated firepower on dismantling Iran’s air defense systems and missile capabilities—clearing a path for broader aerial operations.

The United States Department of Defense has also pointed to the use of cyber, space, and electronic warfare tools to disrupt Iranian communications and blind detection systems.

Previous operations, including Israeli strikes and last summer’s “Operation Midnight Hammer,” had already weakened these defenses. Now, officials say the battlefield has tilted decisively.

The Return of a Cold War Workhorse

Though lacking the stealth of aircraft like the B-2 Spirit or the speed of the B-1 Lancer, the B-52 remains a cornerstone of U.S. strike capability.

First introduced in the 1950s, the bomber—built by Boeing—continues to serve as a long-range powerhouse. Of the 72 active aircraft, some are equipped for conventional missions, while others retain nuclear capabilities.

Even retired units rest in long-term storage at the Air Force’s desert “boneyard” in Arizona, silent reminders of decades of military evolution.

Upgrades Aim for Longevity

Despite its age, the B-52 is far from obsolete. The Air Force is investing heavily in modernization efforts to keep the fleet operational through 2050.

Central to this effort is the Commercial Engine Replacement Program, which will swap aging engines for updated, military-adapted commercial versions. After delays tied to funding constraints, Boeing secured a contract exceeding $2 billion last December to begin upgrades.

Parallel efforts under the Radar Modernization Program aim to enhance detection range and resistance to electronic interference. A milestone was reached last December with the first ferry flight of a B-52 equipped with the new radar system.

A New Phase in the Conflict

The US Begun B-52 Missions in Iran development reflects more than just a tactical adjustment—it signals a broader shift in control of the skies.

Like a heavyweight fighter reentering the ring after decades, the B-52’s return to overland bombing underscores how old tools, sharpened by modern technology, can redefine the contours of war.
