In a dramatic escalation of tensions, US Sues Harvard Over Antisemitism, launching a sweeping legal challenge that accuses the prestigious university of violating the civil rights of Jewish and Israeli students.

The lawsuit, filed in Massachusetts by the administration of Donald Trump, alleges that Harvard University allowed anti-Israel protests to unfold unchecked following the 2023 Hamas attack and Israel’s subsequent military response in Gaza.

Allegations of Campus Hostility and Inaction

According to the 44-page complaint, Harvard “turned a blind eye” to antisemitism while strictly enforcing policies against other forms of discrimination. The filing claims pro-Palestinian demonstrations—including a three-week encampment in 2024—were permitted to operate “with impunity.”

The lawsuit describes disturbing incidents in which Jewish and Israeli students were allegedly denied access to campus facilities, harassed, physically assaulted, stalked, and even spat upon.

“Fearful for their safety, Jewish students wore baseball caps to conceal their yarmulkes,” the complaint states, adding that the university’s response was effectively to “do nothing.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed the action, warning that institutions receiving federal funding risk losing support if they allow discrimination.

Billions in Federal Funding at Stake

Filed in the U.S. District Court for Massachusetts, the case seeks to have Harvard declared in violation of Title VI, which prohibits discrimination in federally funded programs.

If the government prevails, the consequences could be seismic—potentially blocking up to $9 billion in future grants and allowing authorities to recover previously distributed funds.

Federal research funding represents a critical lifeline for Harvard, accounting for roughly 11% of its operating revenue in 2024, with estimates suggesting the university receives as much as $800 million annually.

University leaders have warned that losing such funding could halt vital research programs midstream, including projects focused on cancer and heart disease.

A Feud Years in the Making

The lawsuit marks the latest chapter in a long-running feud between the Trump administration and Harvard. Last September, a federal court ruled that the administration had unlawfully canceled $2.2 billion in research grants tied to disagreements over diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and campus protests.

Harvard had pushed back legally at the time, even as other institutions opted to settle.

The new filing reignites that battle, coming just weeks after Trump publicly demanded a $1 billion payout from the university over alleged antisemitism.

Harvard Pushes Back

Harvard President Alan Garber has previously rejected accusations of systemic antisemitism while acknowledging that the university must continue addressing hate on campus.

“Harvard takes that work seriously,” Garber said in an earlier statement. “We will continue to fight hate with the urgency it demands… That is not only our legal responsibility. It is our moral imperative.”

The university has also filed its own legal action against the administration, accusing it of attempting to control academic decision-making and infringe on constitutional rights.

Broader Legal Pressure Mounts

This is the second lawsuit filed against Harvard in just a month. A prior Justice Department complaint alleged the university failed to demonstrate compliance with requirements eliminating affirmative action in admissions.

Additionally, an executive order barring Harvard’s international students from entering the U.S. was blocked by a federal judge in Boston, further highlighting the contentious legal battlefield.
