A sweeping federal enforcement shift is set to hit thousands of Americans as the U.S. State Department moves to revoke passports from parents who fall behind on child support payments. The policy targets those with significant unpaid debt and signals a far more aggressive stance on financial compliance tied to family obligations.

The move raises the stakes for delinquent payers, turning unpaid child support into a potential travel restriction that could block international movement entirely.

New Crackdown on Child Support Debt

The State Department announced that parents who owe more than $2,500 (€1,844) in child support could face passport revocation, with enforcement focused on cases involving what officials described as significant outstanding debt.

The agency said it is using "commonsense tools to support American families and strengthen compliance" with US laws in an approach it said would enforce parents' "legal and moral obligations to their children".

Officials emphasized that the goal is not symbolic pressure, but direct financial accountability for those who fail to meet court-ordered obligations.

Travel Rights on the Line

Under the new enforcement approach, affected individuals will be warned to arrange payment through relevant state agencies to avoid losing their passports.

Once a passport is revoked, it cannot be used for international travel. Individuals will also be barred from obtaining a new passport until their child support debt is fully paid.

The State Department stated, "This action supports the welfare of American children by exacting real consequences for child support delinquency under existing federal law,"

Rare Law Now Activated More Aggressively

The policy is rooted in a 1996 federal law that allows passport revocation for unpaid child support exceeding $2,500. However, it has historically been used sparingly and typically only triggered when individuals attempted to renew their passports.

The new approach marks a significant shift, with authorities now actively moving to identify and revoke passports rather than waiting for renewal applications.

The State Department confirmed it will collaborate with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to track down individuals with outstanding debt and enforce the policy.

Unclear Start Date, But Enforcement Expected Soon

While officials did not specify an exact launch date, the Associated Press reported that enforcement is expected to begin on Friday. The State Department has not yet publicly confirmed the timeline.

Those who are outside the United States when their passport is revoked could face additional complications. According to the AP, they would need to visit a U.S. embassy or consulate to obtain an emergency travel document in order to return home.
