A countdown clock is ticking for patients caught between two healthcare giants. Commercial insurance contracts between UnitedHealthcare and both USA Health University Hospital and USA Health Children's & Women's Hospital are set to expire unless a new agreement is reached by Sept. 30, 2026 — leaving thousands of patients watching closely to see how the standoff resolves.

Over a Year of Failed Negotiations

This isn't a sudden dispute. USA Health has spent more than a year working to hammer out a fair agreement with UnitedHealthcare, according to the health system. Despite that extended effort, the two sides still haven't found common ground.

What Changes on October 1

If no deal materializes before the deadline, commercial UnitedHealthcare members will lose in-network coverage at every USA Health hospital starting Oct. 1, 2026 — a shift that could translate into significantly higher out-of-pocket costs for patients relying on that coverage. This wouldn't be the first facility affected: USA Health Providence Hospital has already been out-of-network with UnitedHealthcare since Nov. 15, 2025, offering something of a preview for what could spread to the system's other hospitals.

Medicare Advantage and Veterans Coverage Remain Unaffected

Not every UnitedHealthcare plan is caught in the crossfire. UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage and Veterans Community Care Network plans will continue to remain in-network at both University Hospital and Children's & Women's Hospital, regardless of how the commercial contract dispute unfolds. UnitedHealthcare Veterans Community Care coverage also remains in-network at Providence Hospital specifically.

Emergency Care Protections Stay in Place

Regardless of contract status, federal law requires UnitedHealthcare to cover emergency services — including visits to emergency departments at any USA Health facility. That legal protection means patients facing a genuine medical emergency won't need to worry about network status before seeking urgent care.

Physicians Remain In-Network

Even as hospital coverage hangs in the balance, USA Health-employed physicians will continue to remain in-network with UnitedHealthcare insurance products, according to the health system — meaning outpatient physician visits shouldn't be affected by the broader hospital contract dispute.
