Kouri Richins, the Utah mother convicted of murdering her husband with a fentanyl-laced Moscow Mule, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on what would have been his 44th birthday.

Utah District Court Judge Richard Mrazik delivered the harsh sentence Wednesday, stating that someone who committed Richins’ crimes is “simply too dangerous to ever be free.”

“Kouri Richins was convicted unanimously… of attempting to murder Eric Richins — her husband and the father of her three children,” the judge said. “And then, having failed in her first effort, doubling down… and ultimately completing the act through the administration of poison. And for what? Money.”

A Chilling Contrast

Richins gained national attention after her husband Eric’s death in March 2022 when she wrote and promoted a children’s book titled Are You With Me? about coping with grief. She appeared on local television speaking about how she and her three sons were processing the “unexpected” loss of their father.

Prosecutors proved she had deliberately poisoned Eric with a massive dose of fentanyl — nearly five times a lethal amount — in order to cash in on his life insurance and other financial assets.

Courtroom Drama

During her sentencing, Richins spoke for roughly 30 minutes, addressing her children directly while maintaining her innocence.

“As much as you’ve been influenced into thinking that I’m a murderer… that is completely wrong. That is an absolute lie,” she said. “I will never quit fighting my way home to you boys.”

Her three sons, through victim impact statements, made it clear they do not feel safe around their mother and urged the judge to impose the maximum sentence.

Eric’s sister emotionally told the court that Richins had cut the children off from their father’s family for 15 months after his death and described her as “evil.”

This case is as disturbing as it is tragic. A mother of three allegedly poisoned her husband in cold blood for financial gain, then used his death to write and promote a grief book for children — all while investigators closed in on her.

The sentencing brings some measure of justice for Eric Richins and his family, but the emotional scars left on his three young sons will last a lifetime. Richins now faces life behind bars with additional charges related to financial crimes still pending.

Her defense team plans to appeal, meaning this heartbreaking saga may not be over. But for now, the woman who once presented herself as a grieving widow has been sentenced to spend the rest of her life in prison for the calculated murder of her husband.
