A wave of deceptive messages is sweeping across metro Phoenix, tricking residents into believing they owe urgent court fines, as officials warn of a growing scam that is sending people into confusion and even into courtrooms for hearings that do not exist.

The Judicial Branch of Arizona in Maricopa County issued a public warning Tuesday after scammers began flooding phones and inboxes with fake demands for payment tied to tolls, speeding tickets and parking violations. The messages are designed to look official, but authorities say they are part of a coordinated fraud effort escalating across the region.

Urgent Threat Tactics Used to Pressure Victims

Scammers are using fear as their main weapon. The messages often claim recipients must pay immediately or face consequences tied to a supposed 9 a.m. hearing the next day.

Officials say the urgency is fake, but convincing enough to push some residents into action without verifying the source.

Fake Court Identity at Center of Scheme

In Maricopa County, the scam falsely references a so-called “Superior Court Traffic Division” to appear legitimate.

Officials made it clear this division does not exist.

The Judicial Branch includes Superior Court, Adult Probation and Juvenile Probation, along with juvenile detention services. Authorities emphasized that none of these departments would ever demand payment through threatening messages or request QR code scans to resolve fines.

Confusion Escalates as Residents Show Up in Court

The scam has already caused real-world disruption. Officials said 32 people targeted by the fraudulent messages appeared at court Wednesday morning, believing they had scheduled obligations.

The incident highlights how convincing the scam has become and how easily misinformation is pulling residents into unnecessary legal panic.

Officials Issue Direct Warning

“Delete any message from the ‘Superior Court Traffic Division,’ as it’s not real”

Authorities are urging residents to immediately remove these messages and avoid engaging with them in any form.

Officials also warned against clicking links, downloading attachments or scanning QR codes included in the messages, noting they may install malware designed to steal personal information.

High-Risk Payment Demands Raise Red Flags

Another major warning sign is the demand for immediate payment through methods that are difficult to trace, including cash, gift cards, cryptocurrency or wire transfer services.

Officials said legitimate courts never request payment in this way.

They also stressed that courts will not ask for sensitive personal information such as a Social Security number over the phone, by text or by email.

Growing Scam Wave Across the Valley

Authorities continue to urge vigilance as phishing-style scams become more sophisticated, blending official language with threats designed to create panic and pressure quick financial decisions.
