Harvey Weinstein faces new charges in a fresh indictment issued Thursday by Manhattan prosecutors as they prepare to retry the disgraced Hollywood mogul. This follows the overturning of his previous sex crimes conviction earlier this year.
New Indictment and Health Issues
Weinstein’s new indictment, which will remain sealed until his arraignment, comes as prosecutors gear up for a second trial scheduled for November 12. Weinstein, 72, has been suffering from serious health issues and was recently rushed to Bellevue Hospital for emergency heart surgery. He is currently serving time at Rikers Island for his rape conviction in Los Angeles.
Weinstein Hit With New Charges : Overturned Conviction
In 2020, Weinstein was convicted of sexually assaulting former “Project Runway” assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison. However, New York’s top appellate court overturned the conviction in April 2023, ruling in a narrow 4-3 decision that Weinstein’s civil rights had been violated. The court found that the trial judge had allowed testimony from three women about alleged sexual assaults that were not part of the indictment, creating an unfair situation for the defendant.
