WeRide insurance partnership

WeRide is strengthening the foundation beneath its international autonomous driving ambitions, bringing two major insurance players into a global partnership designed to help driverless vehicles move across borders and into more commercial markets.

The company has launched the WeRide insurance partnership program with Allianz Insurance Singapore Pte. Ltd. and Ping An Property & Casualty Insurance Company of China Ltd. as its inaugural partners. The initiative aims to support autonomous driving deployments in markets where WeRide already operates, including China, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, while preparing for planned launches across broader Europe.

By combining international and Chinese insurance expertise with WeRide’s autonomous driving technology and operational experience, the program is intended to address one of the industry's central challenges: managing the risks that come with putting driverless vehicles on public roads at commercial scale.

Insurance Strategy Targets the Full Lifecycle of Driverless Vehicles

The program is designed to support WeRide’s expansion across different regulatory frameworks and operating environments. Under the arrangement, the company and its insurance partners will jointly develop coverage tailored to Level 4 (L4) autonomous vehicle operations.

The proposed solutions will cover several areas of risk throughout the vehicles' operational lifecycles, including motor liability, commercial general liability, product liability, and privacy and cybersecurity exposures. Coverage will be structured in accordance with the requirements of individual markets.

WeRide expects the partnerships to deliver benefits beyond immediate risk protection. As cooperation deepens, centralized insurance programs, longer-term arrangements and larger vehicle fleets could improve insurance efficiency and strengthen unit economics.

The company argues that insurance is not simply a financial safety net for autonomous vehicles. It is also a critical part of the infrastructure required to make driverless mobility safe, commercially viable and capable of expanding into new markets.

Allianz and Ping An Bring Regional Insurance Experience

Allianz Expands Its Autonomous Vehicle Coverage in Singapore

Allianz Insurance Singapore, ranked as the country's third-largest motor insurer by gross written premiums as of the second quarter of 2026, is already a major insurance partner for WeRide's autonomous vehicle operations in Singapore.

The insurer made history as the first company in Singapore to provide coverage for a fully driverless autonomous vehicle through WeRide's Robobus service at Sentosa. Its involvement later expanded to Robotaxis operated by WeRide in partnership with Grab as part of the Ai.R autonomous shuttle service in Punggol.

The service had recorded more than 13,000 unique riders and accumulated over 135,000 kilometers of autonomous driving mileage by October 2026. Those figures offer a glimpse into the growing operational footprint of driverless mobility in Singapore and the insurance arrangements supporting it.

Ping An Supports Operations Across China and the Middle East

WeRide has also worked with Ping An P&C Insurance, one of China's largest property and casualty insurers, to develop insurance solutions that comply with local requirements and support Robotaxi operations in China and the Middle East.

The collaboration covers four of WeRide's flagship driverless commercial markets: Beijing, Guangzhou, Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The company has established scaled driverless operations in all four locations, making insurance coverage an important component of its regional expansion strategy.

The partnership supports WeRide's Robotaxi deployments through its own WeRide Go platform and third-party mobility services, including Uber and TXAI. By combining insurance protection with local operational experience, the arrangement is intended to help autonomous vehicle services navigate the different requirements of international markets.

Executives Highlight Insurance as a Key to Global Growth

WeRide CFO and Head of International Jennifer Li said the agreements with established insurers demonstrate confidence in the company's technology and strengthen the infrastructure needed to expand autonomous driving internationally.

“Our partnerships with leading insurers reflect the strength of WeRide’s technology. Insurance is a critical part of the infrastructure needed to bring autonomous driving to scale globally, and this program strengthens that foundation as we expand into more markets,” Li said.

Ong Bi Ying, chief executive officer of Allianz Insurance Singapore, pointed to the insurer's experience covering fully driverless vehicles as a foundation for the collaboration.

“As the first insurer in Singapore to cover a fully driverless autonomous vehicle, Allianz has been at the forefront of understanding and managing the unique risks that come with this transformative technology,” Ong said.

She added that the partnership reflects Allianz's commitment to supporting innovation responsibly. By developing insurance products specifically for autonomous vehicle operations, the companies aim to establish the trust and safety framework needed for Singapore's smart mobility ambitions.

Ong also said Allianz looks forward to strengthening the relationship as autonomous driving expands throughout the region.

Hequn Shi, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of Ping An P&C Insurance, emphasized the growing need for international insurance coverage as China's autonomous driving industry enters overseas markets.

“As China’s autonomous driving industry goes global, there is an urgent need for matching globalized insurance coverage,” Shi said.

He described the agreement as an important example of Ping An's efforts to support the international expansion of Chinese autonomous driving companies through its “technology + insurance” services.

Shi said the insurer intends to use its capabilities in risk identification, loss compensation and risk mitigation to help Chinese autonomous driving technology achieve safe and stable commercial operations in international markets.

WeRide Operates Thousands of Autonomous Vehicles Worldwide

The insurance initiative comes as WeRide continues to build one of the world's largest autonomous driving fleets. The company currently operates approximately 3,600 autonomous vehicles across 13 countries and more than 60 cities.

Its global fleet includes over 1,800 Robotaxis, underscoring the scale of its operations and the importance of developing insurance arrangements capable of supporting a growing international presence.

Looking ahead, WeRide plans to bring additional insurance companies and markets into the program. It also intends to explore customized approaches to insurance protocols, pricing structures and coverage models designed specifically for autonomous vehicles.

As driverless technology moves from limited trials toward broader commercial deployment, the ability to manage liability, protect passengers and address emerging digital risks could prove just as important as the vehicles themselves. WeRide's latest initiative seeks to make that protection part of the road ahead.
