A chain-reaction collision turned a major interstate into a gridlocked corridor Tuesday, as the Westbound I-70 crash in Colorado unfolded near the Eisenhower Tunnel, snarling traffic and sending dozens to hospitals.

Authorities described the scene as a sprawling tangle of metal and motion — a sudden freeze-frame of chaos stretching across lanes in Clear Creek County.

Multi-vehicle pileup leaves dozens injured

According to the Colorado State Patrol, the crash was first reported around 2:50 p.m. and occurred in the eastbound lanes near milepost 216. What began as a single incident quickly escalated into a massive pileup.

The Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office confirmed that at least 75 vehicles were involved — a scale that transformed the highway into what responders described as a logistical battlefield.

Nineteen մարդկանց were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to serious. Officials reported no fatalities as of Tuesday evening, offering a measure of relief amid the wreckage.

Lanes shut down as emergency response unfolds

Despite the crash occurring in the eastbound lanes, the impact rippled across both directions of traffic.

The westbound left lane of Interstate 70 was closed to allow emergency crews to stage medical operations, while the right lane remained open but sluggish, inching forward under heavy congestion.

Meanwhile, all eastbound lanes were expected to remain closed for four to six hours, as crews worked to clear debris, assist victims, and investigate the cause of the crash.

A critical artery brought to a standstill

Interstate 70, a vital transportation route through the Rocky Mountains, became a corridor of flashing lights and halted engines — a reminder of how quickly normalcy can fracture on one of the nation’s busiest highways.

As authorities continue to assess the situation, drivers have been urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while the cleanup and investigation proceed.
