A routine Saturday night at a Wilmington-area Wawa erupted into chaos when a workplace confrontation escalated into a barricade situation, a knife threat, and a fire that left one man injured and ended with a dramatic arrest by state troopers.

Standoff Inside Busy Convenience Store

State Police were called to the Wawa on Limestone Road around 8:20 p.m. after reports of a dangerous disturbance inside the store.

When troopers arrived, Raul Zavala, 36, of Wilmington, had already barricaded himself inside the manager’s office with two co-workers, turning a routine employee meeting into a frightening hostage-like situation.

According to investigators, Zavala had been summoned to the office earlier in the day regarding an incident at work.

Knife Pulled, Escape Blocked

Once inside the office, authorities say Zavala escalated the confrontation by pulling out a knife and refusing to allow anyone to leave the room.

The situation quickly intensified, trapping two employees inside with him as tensions rose and the environment became increasingly volatile.

Fire Breaks Out Inside Office

What happened next turned the standoff into an emergency response operation.

Troopers say Zavala later set a fire inside the office, and the flames spread quickly, forcing him out of the confined space.

The fire added urgency to an already dangerous scene inside the busy convenience store.

Taser Deployed as Police Move In

Once Zavala exited the office, state troopers intervened and used a Taser to subdue and arrest him.

The rapid response ended the immediate threat, but not before injuries were reported.

One of the employees suffered minor injuries during the incident. Zavala also required medical treatment for burns sustained during the fire.

Serious Felony Charges Filed

Zavala is now facing multiple felony charges, including aggravated menacing, unlawful imprisonment, and arson, as authorities continue to investigate the full sequence of events that turned a workplace meeting into a violent criminal case.

The investigation remains ongoing as officials review how a routine call-in meeting escalated into a dangerous standoff involving weapons, fire, and emergency police intervention.
