Late Friday night in Wintergreen, Virginia, an act of violence tragically ended the life of a local police officer, marking him the latest wintergreen police officer killed. Officer Mark Christopher "Chris" Wagner II was fatally wounded, with three others injured during the incident.

Virginia State Police (VSP) reported that the Wintergreen Police Department received a distress call around 10 p.m. about a male suspect who assaulted two other individuals on Arrowood Lane. Upon the arrival of the authorities, these two injured men had already fled the scene. They are currently being treated at UVA Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.

Wintergreen Police Officer Killed : A Confrontation in the Woods

Officer Wagner, being the first responder to arrive at the incident site, encountered the suspect hidden in the nearby woods.

A violent struggle ensued, during which Wagner was shot and later pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the fatal confrontation, Wintergreen Police and the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office took the suspect into custody.

The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, was transported to the UVA Medical Center to treat a non-life threatening injury.

Officer Wagner's department-issued firearm was later recovered from the woods where the confrontation took place.

Officer Wagner: The Man Behind the Badge

The Wintergreen community mourns the loss of Officer Wagner, with heartfelt tributes pouring in to remember his service.

A 31-year-old resident of Stuarts Draft, Wagner was an alumnus of Spotswood High School and had joined the Wintergreen Police force in August 2020.

Prior to his time in Wintergreen, he had dedicated seven years of service to the Massanutten Police Department.

His journey from being a gate attendant to graduating from Central Shenandoah Criminal Justice Academy as an officer in May of 2019, spoke of his commitment towards the badge.

Chief of Police Dennis Russell, in his tribute, highlighted Wagner's love for his job and the midnight shift he willingly took on, painting a picture of an officer ready and willing to serve, at any time.

Remembering Officer Wagner: A Beacon of Light in Wintergreen

Chief Russell reminisced about the unique aspects of Officer Wagner's personality - his preference for dark sunglasses during the day, his infectious laugh echoing throughout the office, and his love for the outdoors and photography.

Wagner also served as the agency's TASER and BolaWrap instructor, carrying a variety of tools on his belt that earned him a loving comparison to Batman by his own father.

However, the death of the wintergreen police officer killed in the line of duty has shed light on a concerning issue.

The Wintergreen Police Department, being a private police department in Virginia, means Officer Wagner’s family is not eligible for line of duty death benefits from the state.

To assist the bereaved family, the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police and Chief Russell have organized a fundraiser.

The Wintergreen community is rallying together, reinforcing the fact that Officer Wagner, in the words of his colleagues, "was and always will be a hero."
