Subscribers to YouTube are about to feel a familiar squeeze, as the platform rolls out a fresh YouTube Premium price increase—another ripple in a rising tide of streaming costs.

Monthly Bills Set to Rise

The streaming giant confirmed Friday, April 10, that it is increasing prices across its Premium subscription tiers in the United States. The move marks the first adjustment since 2023, according to a statement shared with USA TODAY.

“This change allows us to maintain the features our members value most,” the company said, pointing to ad-free viewing, background play, and access to a vast library of more than 300 million tracks through YouTube Music.

New Pricing Breakdown

Like a slow but steady climb up a steep hill, the updated prices affect nearly every plan:

• YouTube Premium: now $15.99 per month, up $2 from $13.99
• YouTube Music Premium: now $11.99 per month, up $1
• YouTube Premium Lite: now $8.99 per month, up $1
• Family plan (up to six users): rises by $4 to $26.99 per month
• Student plan: increases by $1 to $8.99 per month

These subscriptions continue to bundle features such as offline downloads and uninterrupted playback—perks that have become the backbone of the platform’s paid ecosystem.

A Broader Industry Trend

The YouTube Premium price increase does not stand alone. Across the streaming landscape, companies are steadily turning the dial upward.

Netflix raised its U.S. prices in March, nudging its ad-supported tier up by $1 to $8.99 monthly. Its standard plan climbed by $2, while the premium tier surged by $4 to reach $26.99.

Meanwhile, Spotify adjusted its Premium pricing in January, increasing its individual plan to $12.99 and raising both duo and family plans. The company said periodic price updates help sustain service quality and support artists.

Even Disney has joined the trend, boosting prices last fall for both Disney+ and Hulu. Disney+ with ads jumped to $11.99 per month, while its premium version rose to $18.99. Hulu’s ad-supported plan also increased by $2 to $11.99.
