12 Killed in Horrific Skydiving Plane Crash in Missouri — Victims Include Beloved Music Teacher, Cancer Survivor, and New Father of Twins

A devastating plane crash at a Missouri skydiving drop zone has claimed the lives of 12 people, including a popular high school music teacher, a cancer survivor, and a new father of twin boys, turning what should have been an exhilarating weekend jump into an unimaginable tragedy.
The Pacific Aerospace P750XL aircraft went down shortly after takeoff from the Butler, Missouri airport south of Kansas City on Saturday. The plane, carrying nine experienced skydivers, two tandem jumpers, and a pilot, took an unexpected turn and nosedived into the ground just 300 yards from the runway.
Among those lost was Dave Hershberger, a dedicated music teacher at Oak Park High School and Antioch Middle School in the North Kansas City School District. Colleagues described him as “one of the kindest humans” and a passionate educator whose Facebook was filled with joyful images from his many skydives.
Matthew Swope, 39, a cancer survivor who had completed over 750 jumps, was remembered by his mother as someone who “died doing what he loved best.” Another victim, a young father with two newborn boys, left behind a family just beginning their journey together. At least four of the victims were on what was supposed to be their final jump before becoming instructors.
This heartbreaking crash has sent shockwaves through the skydiving community and beyond, raising fresh concerns about safety standards in an adventure sport that attracts thrill-seekers from all walks of life. While the victims were experienced jumpers pursuing a passion they loved, the sudden loss of so many lives in one incident is a devastating reminder of how quickly things can go wrong even in carefully managed operations.
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, with preliminary findings expected in the coming weeks and a full report possibly not until 2027. Past NTSB reports on skydiving incidents have highlighted issues with aircraft maintenance and regulatory oversight, adding urgency to the current probe.
For the families left behind — including Hershberger’s students, Swope’s loved ones, and the new father’s young children — the pain is immeasurable. As friends and colleagues mourn, many are left reflecting on the thin line between adventure and tragedy, and the irreplaceable void left by those who lived life boldly in the skies.
