In a striking and controversial vision for the nation’s capital, newly released renderings reveal plans for a towering monument—a 250-foot triumphal arch in Washington that could reshape the skyline near some of America’s most sacred sites.

A Monument Designed to Dominate the Horizon

The U.S. Interior Department has submitted detailed designs for the proposed arch near Arlington National Cemetery, showing a structure that would loom over the landscape like a colossus.

At roughly 250 feet tall, the arch would stand more than twice the height of the Lincoln Memorial, which rises 99 feet. If built, it would become the tallest triumphal arch in the world—surpassing even Mexico City’s Plaza de la República by about 30 feet.

Symbolism, Statues, and Patriotic Inscriptions

Planned for a traffic circle on the Virginia side of the Potomac River, the site lies between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, technically within the boundaries of Washington, D.C..

Designs crafted by Harrison Design showcase inscriptions such as “One Nation Under God” and “Liberty and Justice For All” etched into the structure. At its summit, gold-toned figures of Lady Liberty flanked by two eagles would stand watch, while four lion statues anchor the base—imagery meant to evoke strength and unity.

A Presidential Vision for America’s 250th Anniversary

Donald Trump has championed the project, repeatedly sharing concepts and describing the monument as a personal vision. Modeled in part after Paris’ Arc de Triomphe, the proposed arch is intended to commemorate the United States’ 250th anniversary.

The president has emphasized his ambition for the structure to be the “biggest one of all,” a superlative meant to echo across generations.

Funding and Flight Path Concerns

The project would be partially funded by American taxpayers. According to the spending plan from the National Endowment for the Humanities, approved by the Office of Management and Budget, $2 million in special initiative funds and $13 million in matching funds have been earmarked for the arch.

However, the proposal is not without turbulence. The site lies along a flight path for Reagan National Airport, raising concerns about potential impacts on aircraft approaches—a factor that could complicate or even ground the project.

Next Steps and Public Scrutiny

The Commission of Fine Arts, a panel composed entirely of presidential appointees, is scheduled to review the proposal during a presentation on April 16.
