USA HERALD - When the world saw its first interstellar visitor, Comet 2I/Borisov, in 2019, the excitement was palpable. A rogue comet from another star system, streaking through the solar system at 110,000 mph, Borisov was our first verified glimpse of matter that didn’t originate here.

Now, six years later, NASA’s latest stacked imagery from the Perseverance rover’s Mastcam-Z has revealed the faint silhouette of another visitor—3I/ATLAS—gliding over the Martian sky at nearly 130,000 mph. At first glance, the image bears a striking resemblance to Borisov.

But beneath that surface similarity lies a story of profound difference.

Speed, Mass, and an Unstable Composition

Where Borisov behaved like a textbook comet—a ball of frozen gases and dust shedding material predictably as it neared the Sun—3I/ATLAS is rewriting the rulebook.
Astrophysicists estimate that 3I/ATLAS is at least four times larger in diameter and significantly denser. Its acceleration curve doesn’t match solar radiation pressure alone, hinting that its structure could contain metallic or composite materials that behave differently under heat and gravity.

In layman’s terms, Borisov sublimated like a snowball near a fire. 3I/ATLAS is acting more like a molten meteorite that refuses to melt, maintaining shape and speed through regions where Borisov began to fragment.

Different Origins, Different Stories

Harvard astrophysicists Amir Siraj and Avi Loeb predicted in a 2021 Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society study that our solar system should host countless interstellar visitors originating from vastly different star-forming regions. Borisov’s chemical signature pointed to a system rich in carbon monoxide and other volatile ices—evidence of birth in a cold, outer planetary disk.

3I/ATLAS, by contrast, exhibits light-spectrum anomalies suggesting a hotter, inner-disk origin, possibly from a planetary system that experienced a violent ejection event.
If verified, that would make it the first interstellar object known to carry material forged under high-temperature stellar conditions, giving researchers an unprecedented sample of exoplanetary crust.

Observation Tech Finally Catches Up

Back in 2021, Siraj said, “We just don’t have the technology to see them yet.”
Four years later, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory has changed that.
Its Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), which went live earlier this year in Chile, is already capable of spotting faint, fast-moving interstellar objects—predicting that the sky will now yield one detection every month.

This leap in capability means 3I/ATLAS is no isolated miracle. It could be the first in a parade of new discoveries revealing the galactic debris flow that constantly drifts through our solar system.

A Tale of Two Visitors

Why It Matters

For planetary scientists, the contrast between these two visitors is the key to understanding how different solar systems evolve and die. If Borisov was the archetype of a frozen emissary from a stable, cold system, 3I/ATLAS may be evidence of a chaotic star system shedding its own planetary remains.

Each visitor is a time capsule. One froze. The other burned—and survived.
