A powerful U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bomber has crashed shortly after takeoff at Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California, killing all eight people on board in what officials are describing as an “unsurvivable” incident.

The massive long-range bomber went down around 11:20 a.m. local time on June 15 during a test mission supporting a radar modernization program. The aircraft “crashed and burst into flames” immediately after leaving the runway, according to base officials.

Col. James Hayes confirmed the devastating loss, stating simply: “We lost eight great Americans. This crash is deemed to be unsurvivable.”

First responders acted quickly to contain the fire, and the wreckage was confined to the base runway. However, dramatic footage from the scene shows a large charred area littered with debris and thick smoke rising from the remains.

As of now, no cause has been determined for the crash. Officials say a full investigation could take months, and the victims — a mix of military personnel and civilian contractors — have not yet been publicly identified. Boeing confirmed that two of the deceased were company employees and said it is supporting their families.
