In January, Wyoming GOP Rep. Liz Cheney voted in support of impeaching then-President Donald Trump. Cheney alleged that Trump incited the insurrection on the 6th of January, siding with nine other House Republicans who shared this view.

After Cheney's January vote, the House GOP held a vote on possibly removing Cheney from the leadership post of House Republican Conference chair. Cheney maintained her post following this vote; however, she's continued to openly go after and speak against Trump.

House Republicans warned a few weeks ago that Cheney wasn't doing herself any favors. Some conservative lawmakers spoke to the press earlier this month and predicted that Cheney's time as the House GOP Conference chair would soon end.

This morning, Republicans in the House of Representatives formally voted to oust Rep. Liz Cheney from her GOP leadership role.

Why House Republicans stripped Cheney of her GOP leadership post

Earlier this month, Leader Kevin McCarthy, the number one House Republican, spoke against the "relitigating" of previous events. McCarthy also stated that House GOP leaders have a job to make sure they're in service to House Republicans, rather than themselves.

McCarthy and many other House Republicans view former President Trump as an imperative asset to the GOP taking back the House majority. Therefore, Cheney's remarks against Trump did not serve well. During a House retreat weeks ago, McCarthy's frustration with Cheney grew when she used the event to, again, denounce former President Trump.

Republicans currently aim to unite the GOP, especially as the midterm elections get nearer. A vital part of unity in the GOP means not alienating former President Trump or the immense coalition that he brings to the Republican Party.

Cheney, however, made it openly clear and apparent that she will continue to denounce Trump; ultimately, this is what engendered the House voice vote stripping Cheney of her post.

Cheney on her removal from House Republican leadership

On Wednesday morning, Cheney did not back down in the slightest; as a matter of fact, the former House GOP Conference Chairwoman doubled down on her anti-Trump views. Cheney promised to the media to employ whatever means she can to keep the 45th president from ever winning re-election.

Following Cheney's removal, GOP congresswoman Elise Stefanik announced her candidacy for House Republican Conference chair. Stefanik also has the endorsements of Trump, McCarthy, and Steve Scalise, the House Minority Whip.

This morning, former President Trump released a statement blasting Cheney as a "warmonger" with no personality. Trump then predicted that either CNN or MSNBC will hire the former GOP leader.
