In an explosive court revelation, the defense for Sam Bankman-Fried, the once-celebrated founder of FTX, alleged that his client is weathering unthinkable conditions at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center.

Since his detention began on August 11th over suspected witness-tampering, the embattled crypto magnate has seemingly been stripped of more than just his freedom.

Bankman-Fried, the brain behind a now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange and charged with swindling billions, cut a somber figure in the courtroom. Cloaked in unassuming beige prison attire and secured by leg shackles, he proclaimed his innocence, gearing up for a looming trial in October.

The counsel for Bankman-Fried, seasoned attorney Mark Cohen of Cohen & Gresser LLP, voiced concerns to U.S. Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn, painting a grim picture. Bankman-Fried hasn't been provided with his essential Adderall prescription for ADHD. Worse still, he was handed a mere "drop in the bucket" – a scant supply of the depression medication Emsam upon his jail entry.

The ordeal doesn't end there. Reminiscent of a starving artist's plight, Bankman-Fried, an unwavering vegan, has been forced to subsist on a meager diet of bread, water, and occasional peanut butter. The jail's refusal to adhere to his dietary restrictions echoes like a timeless tale of man versus system.

"It's like forcing a fish out of water," Cohen exclaimed, noting that his client's strict dietary regime has been replaced by a regular "flesh diet." The judge, seemingly taken aback by the gravity of the accusations, vowed to send an immediate directive addressing the medical and dietary concerns, albeit hinting at potential compromises on vegan demands.

Trial Prep Tensions Rise

The saga of Bankman-Fried's incarceration doesn't cease with dietary disputes. Defense attorneys also lamented their client's inability to adequately prep for the trial. Their plea? Grant Bankman-Fried daily courthouse access to pore over discovery alongside his legal team. A request that U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan has largely sidestepped, save for a token gesture - permitting bi-weekly reviews from the courthouse's cellblock, with the barrier of glass separating him from his legal aides.

Bankman-Fried's plight, reduced to sipping on a Pellegrino during the proceedings, took another twist post-hearing. In an odd turn of events, security hastily ushered the media out before his exit.

The Weight of Allegations

The accusations against Bankman-Fried are monumental. Prosecutors allege he illicitly channeled billions from FTX deposits toward his crypto trading venture, Alameda Research. His rap sheet doesn't end there – illegal campaign donations and lavish personal expenditures are also on the docket.
