More often than not, when conversations about mental health arise, they generally revolve around adults or post-adolescent children. Typically, these are viewed as the demographics that are most in need of interpersonal connections and mental health support.

On the other hand, very young children frequently find themselves overlooked in these critical conversations. Oftentimes, the assumption is that small kids don't have enough happening in their lives to face mental health strains; however, this is far from accurate.

In fact, a new report out of Britain shines a light on the very real importance of mental health checks in young children.

Expanding conversations about mental health

A new study from the Royal College of Psychiatrists stresses the need to help young kids and even babies who may face certain mental health issues.

Doctors with this college maintain that tackling specific problems in children as young as birth to five years old can play a pivotal role in preventing future struggles for them later in life.

The National Health Service in the United Kingdom also documented that 5% of children between the ages of two and four face crippling mental health difficulties. ADHD, behavioral disorders, and anxiety are just a few examples. Left unchecked, these problems can easily fester and worsen.

More information from the Royal College of Psychiatrists states that roughly 50% of mental health issues emerge in children by the time they turn 14. The initial development of these problems tends to begin in their earliest years, though.

Further reports from doctors warn that overlooking the mental health of children between the ages of birth and five years old constitutes a mistake. These years are most critical in setting kids on a healthy pathway to thrive as adults.

To remedy this issue, officials now believe society must collectively work to facilitate more social services for parents of young kids, pregnant women, and further research the general mental health of small children, along with the problems they're most vulnerable to.

An important wake-up call

The children of today will inevitably become the adults, leaders, and decision-makers of tomorrow. Mindfulness of their mental health not only sets them up to thrive as individuals, but it also posits a net win for society.

All things considered, one can only hope that more studies and efforts will go towards supporting the overall wellness of young kids.
