Astrobotic's ambitious mission to soft-land the Peregrine moon lander on the lunar surface is hanging by a thread. The spacecraft has encountered a critical fuel loss. 

The Peregrine moon lander was part of a collaborative effort with two other commercial ventures, Intuitive Machines and Firefly. They planned a total of six lunar surface missions in 2024. 

These missions aimed to advance lunar research in preparation for crewed visits to the moon through NASA's Artemis program later this decade.

The latest mission update from the private American company, issued on Monday evening (Jan. 8), revealed that the Peregrine lander now has just 40 hours of fuel remaining, putting the entire mission at risk.

The mission marked the inaugural launch of the United Launch Alliance's advanced Vulcan Centaur rocket. Unfortunately, trouble struck shortly after the spacecraft deployed from the rocket's Centaur upper stage.

Peregrine Moon Lander Critical Condition 

Astrobotic, based in Pittsburgh, is grappling with a fuel leak on the Peregrine lander, rendering stable spacecraft pointing impossible to maintain. The company warns that the mission could fail within hours, marking a setback for NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program.

The Peregrine moon lander was part of a collaborative effort with two other commercial ventures, Intuitive Machines and Firefly, planning a total of six lunar surface missions in 2024. These missions aimed to advance lunar research in preparation for crewed visits to the moon through NASA's Artemis program later this decade.

The urgency of the situation is underscored by the fact that a successful touch-down on the lunar surface, a milestone not achieved by the United States in half a century, is now deemed impossible. 

Astrobotic's priority is to bring the Peregrine as close to lunar distance as possible before it loses the ability to maintain its Sun-pointing position and subsequently loses power, as stated in a company release.

MLI Disturbed

The troubled Peregrine moon lander managed to capture its first photo in space, offering valuable insights into the spacecraft's condition. 

The image, shared via social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), reveals Multi-Layer Insulation (MLI) in the foreground. Astrobotic explained that the disturbance of the MLI aligns with telemetry data pointing to a propulsion system anomaly.

Originally scheduled for a historic moon landing on Feb. 23, the Peregrine's loss of propellant has forced Astrobotic to explore alternative mission scenarios. 

Despite the challenges, there is a glimmer of hope as the mission team successfully charged the lander's battery. They are leveraging existing power for as many payload and spacecraft operations as possible before the inevitable loss.
