A 2-year-old child was discovered dead in the Winthrop residence of former Massachusetts police lieutenant, James Anthony Feeley, last Thursday. Feeley, 56, who was arrested on Christmas on child rape charges, remains in jail awaiting trial. 

Pleads not guilty

Feeley, 56, faces charges of aggravated statutory rape of a child and two counts of indecent assault and battery of a child under 14, with a bond set at $200,000.

The toddler, whose identity has not been disclosed, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Authorities claim that the preliminary investigation "indicates no signs of foul play or physical trauma."  Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden's spokesperson stated, "We are awaiting an autopsy to determine cause of death."

Massachusetts Police Lieutenant Confessed

The accused man was a 22-year veteran of the police force. He has been placed on administrative leave by the Winthrop Police Department pending the outcome of the criminal investigation. 

The former police lieutenant was also a foster parent, as disclosed by the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families.

Details emerged from a criminal complaint filed in East Boston Municipal Court, revealing that Feeley had admitted to the crimes on Christmas night while standing by his parents' gravesites. He has pleaded not guilty.

He was initially taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

The alleged victim was treated at Boston Children's Hospital. This is where the child claimed that Feeley's assaults started about a year ago.

His LinkedIn page indicates involvement in the local church and a history as a business owner. 

The Department of Children and Families collaborates with law enforcement agencies. The unnamed victim, reported ongoing abuse for about a year, remains central to the case.

He is due back in court for a hearing on January 29.

The tragedy intertwining another child's death with allegations of child abuse has shocked the community.
