Europe Imposes Higher Tariffs

EV Vehicle

The European Union startles China as Europe imposes higher tariffs soaring the percentage to 45% on electric vehicles, that are manufactured and delivered to Europe from China. This decision has increased the trade tensions between the countries, that share the title of being the world’s leading export powers since the remaining world looks up to their decisions.

On Tuesday evening, the rule of the new excise duty stole the limelight as it was published in the official journal of the European Union. The announcement took China by surprise as they spent months discussing with Europe, that they could retaliate. And make it a tough situation for the European Union to come out of it, which can even impact the auto-industry pleas if they want to avoid the surging rates.

Are Europe’s EV Tariffs A Setback For Chinese Producers?

As Europe imposes higher tariffs on electrical vehicles, it has proven as a setback for Chinese manufacturers. Why? Because they feel like they have been blocked out from capturing the automobile industry in the European Union, where they saw immense potential to introduce their EV. Was this the first attempt of The European Union to boost the taxes? No, it was not as last year, the duty exceeded more than 100%. The reason was that year government subsidies and exports surged to an extensive level of 70%.

Does Europe Imposes Higher Tariffs On and Off?

No, instead the European Union's taxation decision varies depending on what the manufacturer offers them and as a result will range from 8% to just over 35%. Not to forget that the existing rate will also be charged in the bill that is of 10%.

It seems that the European Union’s toll decision was made out of the fear that China has advanced so much in automotive technology. Since, now it is in between taking the reward for dominating automobiles at a global scale. But does China deserve all the credit? Absolutely not as China is getting appreciated for its innovative technology used in EV transport at the expense of enemies, who never want to see Europe as a progressive state. Plus, it is also getting funded by the leader of the whole world, which is none other than America.

Why This Insecurity?

You must be wondering why is the European Union feeling so insecure about China that it actually released its frustration by imposing higher tariffs on electrical vehicles from there. The major reason is that many years ago China was known as just another car manufacturer present in the world. But after they revamped their automotive section which was in the shape of introducing a new battery technology, their golden period started. China progressed so much and gave the world a good show, that in a matter of few years, they took the position of being one of the top 10 automakers in the world. How they started and how they ended up, makes the European Union insecure.

While the European Union was demanding China to pay higher taxes, some prominent vehicle manufacturers of the European market such as Mercedes-Benz Group and BMW AG came in support of China. They forwarded their concern that the European Union should step back with this taxing as their action. It will result in negative consequences for their sales in China. The reason was that when they are all struggling to make their ends meet, and they did not want to end their business in China.

The top labor leader at Volkswagen said , that even Europe’s biggest automobile manufacturer, who works in Germany plans to close at least three of its factories for good. Why? For not generating enough revenue for the functions to operate normally.

Will The EU and China Still Be On Talking Terms Or Not?

Despite the conflict in thinking, the European Union will continue to talk to China, even after Europe imposes higher tariffs on their Electrical Vehicles. The discussion will be done with the intention of searching for solutions that can benefit both the buyer and seller. However, those conversations have not given any effective results as none of the countries have found a way how to tackle the tariffs. So far the elevation in duty has raised the risk of a tit-for-tat negotiation in a relationship that shared a value of $799 billion in 2023 during bilateral merchandise trade.

After viewing the tax mention in the EU’s official journal, the nation’s Ministry of Commerce said that amidst the heated situation between the world’s exporting countries, China remains hopeful that the European Union might not leave them in such a situation. They are trying their best to enter the automobile industry and will take all the correct measures to defend their company and stand by what is right in their favor.

The Negotiation Between Brussels and Beijing

A lot of negotiation has been taking place between Brussels and Beijing. What is happening in these discussions? The negotiators have been finding ways to a possible agreement revolving around so-called price undertakings. To get an intricate mechanism for controlling volumes and exports of the prices. These can assist in avoiding the excise that EU considers just fine to counter Chinese industrial subsidies.

People aware of these discussions said Beijing has still not said anything final. China is yet to pitch relevant proposals aligned to tick off the EU’s strict rules and regulations. This also includes meeting the rules of the World Trade Organisation to match the consequences of the duties. Besides, the 27-nation block is also in line to make sure that the EU can track the arrangements for further compliance.

One of the negotiators said that the recent talks have resulted in a breakthrough as Europe imposes higher tariffs. The EU officials are accepting China’s invitation to have another round of discussions hoping to have a fruitful outcome.

Conclusion

The European Union’s latest decision to increase taxes on China’s EVs has compelled their government to request EU officials to reconsider. Otherwise, it will result in a loss for both countries.
