Mysterious Drone Activity Across the Region
Drones, remote-controlled pilotless aircraft, have been spotted flying over New Jersey residential neighborhoods at night. Recordings circulating on social media show drones with flashing lights traveling in groups, with some reportedly as large as SUVs. In several instances, these unexplained devices have been seen nightly, sparking debates about their origins and purpose. In New Jersey, sightings have been concentrated in Somerset and Morris counties. A video recorded on November 25 by Mike Walsh, a resident of Morris County, captured drones flying over Black River Middle School in Chester. Meanwhile, the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, located in Somerset County, has also been identified as a nearby location of interest. Similar drone sightings have been reported on Staten Island in New York.
Officials Respond to Public Panic
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy addressed the unusual drone activity in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “We are actively monitoring the situation and in close coordination with our federal and law enforcement partners on this matter. There is no known threat to the public at this time.” Murphy also convened a briefing with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, senior officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), state police, and congressional representatives to discuss the matter. Despite reassurances, state officials are taking these incidents seriously. Amid growing concerns, New Jersey Representative Jeff Van Drew suggested an alarming theory. He claimed that the drones might originate from an Iranian “mothership” stationed off the U.S. East Coast. “From very high sources, very qualified sources, very responsible sources,” Van Drew said, “Iran launched a mothership probably about a month ago that contains these drones. That mothership is off the east coast of the United States of America.” He added, “These drones should be shot down. Whether it was some crazy hobbyist that we can’t imagine, or whether it is Iran – and I think it very possibly could be – they should be shot down.”
