​The case of Émile Soleil, a two-year-old boy who disappeared from his grandparents' garden in Le Haut-Vernet, a hamlet in the French Alps, in July 2023, has taken a significant turn.

 Nearly two years after his disappearance, French prosecutors have arrested his grandparents and two of their adult children on suspicion of voluntary homicide and concealing a corpse. ​

The Disappearance and Search in the French Alps

Émile was reported missing from his grandparents' residence in Le Haut-Vernet, a remote mountain village with only about two dozen inhabitants. He was last seen by neighbors walking alone down the street near the house. 

Despite extensive search operations involving French police and approximately 500 volunteers, no trace of the toddler was found at the time. His parents were not present on the day he vanished. ​

Discovery of Remains and Ongoing Investigations

Nine months later, in March 2024, a hiker discovered Émile's partial remains, including his skull and teeth 1.7 kilometers (1.1 miles) from the village. 

Forensic teams conducted thorough examinations of several locations in the area. Despite these efforts, the cause of death remained undetermined, and the investigation continued. ​

Arrests and Legal Proceedings

On March 25, 2025, authorities arrested Émile's maternal grandparents, Philippe and Anne Vedovini, both 59, along with two of their adult children. They are charged with voluntary homicide and concealing a corpse. 

The arrests were made during early morning raids at their homes in La Bouilladisse and Le Haut-Vernet. The prosecutor's office in Aix-en-Provence confirmed these developments, stating that the individuals were taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.

The grandparents' lawyer, Isabelle Colombani, confirmed that they had been placed in police custody but had no further comment.

Grandfather's Past Allegations

It has emerged that the victim's grandfather, Philippe Vedovini, was previously implicated in allegations of violence and sexual assault at a private Catholic school where he worked in the 1990s. 

Former students alleged incidents of abuse during that period, although Vedovini denied any wrongdoing, and no formal charges were filed against him at the time.

The village of Le Haut-Vernet has been deeply affected by Émile's disappearance and the subsequent developments. Residents have expressed shock and sorrow as the investigation continues to unfold. Authorities have indicated that forensic operations are still ongoing in various locations, with new developments expected as the case progresses. ​
