In the 1st quarter of 2025, fentanyl deaths are decreasing in the US. The sudden drop is the first in decades. Unfortunately, xylazine, also known as the zombie drug, may be posing an increasing threat.

For years, drug overdose deaths in the U.S. had been on the rise. This year, data indicates a sudden decline. 

President Donald Trump claims his move to increase tariffs is part of a larger strategy to control the influx of drugs across the US borders. He says it is a vital tool used to reduce the amount of illicit fentanyl entering the U.S.

A Shift in Overdose Trends

For years, drug overdose deaths in the U.S. had been escalating, primarily due to the proliferation of synthetic opioids like fentanyl. Recent data indicates a sudden decline in these fatalities.

 President Donald Trump attributes this reduction to his administration's strategy of increasing tariffs, aiming to curtail the influx of illicit fentanyl across U.S. borders.​

Emergence of the Zombie Drug

Xylazine, a veterinary tranquilizer not approved for human use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, has emerged as a significant concern. 

Often referred to as "tranq," "tranq dope," or the "zombie drug," xylazine is frequently combined with fentanyl to enhance its effects. This combination has led to severe health crises in major U.S. cities, including San Francisco, New York, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. ​

UA study published in the Journal of Addiction Medicine focused on records from 23 users at the Prevencasa free clinic in Tijuana, Mexico.

The findings were alarming: 82.6% of participant urine samples tested positive for xylazine using Wisebatch test strips, while SAFELife test strips detected the drug in 65.2% of samples. 

Notably, all samples also tested positive for fentanyl, underscoring the prevalent co-usage of these substances.​

According to The Sun, the deadly zombie drug is becoming more prevalent in Europe and the UK. 

 Health Risks Associated with Xylazine

Xylazine acts on the central nervous system as a depressant and pain reliever. Its use in humans is associated with profound sedation, complex withdrawal syndromes, and a heightened risk of skin infections and wounds.

 In severe cases, injecting drug mixtures containing xylazine can lead to rotting tissue, necessitating amputations. Public health officials have raised alarms about the spread of this "zombie drug" and its devastating impact on communities. 

Geographical Spread and Concerns

While xylazine has been most prevalent in California and on the East Coast of the United States, recent evidence confirms its presence in Tijuana, Mexico. The influx and use on the U.S.-Mexico border, poses health risks for people in this region. 

There has also been an increase in the drug's presence in Australia, the UK and Europe.

This discovery raises concerns about the potential spread of xylazine into Southern California and other parts of the U.S.

The high prevalence of lidocaine in Tijuana's illicit fentanyl supply may interfere with test strip accuracy regarding xylazine, complicating detection and intervention efforts.​

Addressing the Threat

The decline in fentanyl-related deaths offers a glimmer of hope in the battle against opioid overdoses. However, the emergence and spread of xylazine, with its severe health implications, present a new and formidable challenge. 

Comprehensive strategies encompassing surveillance, education, and harm reduction are essential to combat the rising threat of the "zombie drug" and safeguard public health.​
