Feud between Taylor Swift and Scooter Braun

The feud between Taylor Swift and Scooter Braun, one of the most high-profile music industry battles in recent years, has officially come to an end, with Swift emerging victorious.

On May 30, 2025, the pop superstar announced she had successfully repurchased the rights to her first six albums, reclaiming full control over the music that defined her early career.

A Long and Emotional Journey

Swift, now 35, shared the milestone in an emotional post, expressing gratitude and pride. “All of the music I've ever made now belongs to me,” she wrote. “The memories. The magic. The madness. Every single era. My entire life’s work.”

The fight for her master recordings has been a central theme in her public narrative over the last six years.

The feud began in 2019, when Braun's company, Ithaca Holdings, acquired Big Machine Records—Swift’s former label—and with it, the master recordings of her first six albums.

Swift called the acquisition her “worst-case scenario,” accusing Braun of “manipulative bullying” and claiming she was never offered the chance to buy the masters herself (Yahoo News).

Feud Between Taylor Swift and Scooter Braun

  • June 2019 – Scooter Braun acquires Big Machine Label Group, gaining control of Swift’s masters. She was notified that she could not perform her own music without permission.
  • June 2019 – Swift speaks out, calling the situation “manipulative” and her “worst-case scenario.”
  • November 2020 – Braun sells the masters to Shamrock Capital, allegedly for over $300 million (Yahoo).
  • 2021–2023 – Swift releases re-recorded albums (Fearless (Taylor’s Version), Red (Taylor’s Version), Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), and 1989 (Taylor’s Version). As the songwriter and performer of the modified new releases, she hoped fans would listen to Taylor’s Version instead of the masters held by Shamrock.
  • March 2023- December 2024--The Eras Tour began in Glendale, Arizona, and ended in Vancouver, Canada. Spanning 149 shows in 51 cities across five continents, it became the highest-grossing tour of all time. and the first to earn over $2 billion in revenue.
  • May 30, 2025 – Swift announces she has bought back the master recordings from Shamrock Capital.

On Friday, Taylor explained that she set out on the Eras Tour to gain control of her life’s work, which was effectively taken over by Braun when he gained control of her master recordings.

Braun Responds

Braun, now 43, offered a brief and surprisingly gracious comment following Swift’s announcement: “I am happy for her,” he told The Independent.

Still, many fans remember the tension vividly, including Swift’s claims that she was offered a deal to “earn” back each album, one by one—a proposal she firmly rejected.

Why Master Ownership Matters

In the music industry, owning master recordings gives the holder control over how songs are used commercially. Artists typically retain rights to their lyrics and compositions, but labels often own the actual recordings.

Swift’s re-recording strategy and ultimate repurchase have been viewed as a masterclass in regaining power over her work.

Artist Empowerment

The Eras tour created unprecedented public demand. There were record-breaking ticket sales and attendance. It also bolstered economies, businesses, and tourism worldwide, while dominating social media and news cycles.

The tour featured her re-recorded albums Speak Now (Taylor's Version) and 1989 (Taylor's Version) in 2023. She added of Midnights (2022) and The Tortured Poets Department during the tour. The music videos of "Karma", "I Can See You", "I Can Do It with a Broken Heart," and "Cruel Summer" were also released.

She was also involved in the concert film, documenting the Los Angeles shows, which was released to theaters worldwide on October 13, 2023.

It was an uncommon distribution deal, which bypassed major film studios. The film became the highest-grossing concert film in history.

The tour and a self-published The Eras Tour Book were released on November 29, 2024, with Taylor’s total efforts resulting in six Guinness World Records.

Taylor Wins

Swift’s journey has ignited broader conversations about artist rights and industry reform.

Her decision to re-record her early work and now reclaim it entirely has set a precedent for younger creators and musicians. Her actions have not only reshaped the value of her original recordings but have challenged how the industry treats intellectual property.

As she continues her record-breaking Eras Tour (@tswifterastour), Swift’s triumph adds yet another layer to her legacy—not just as a performer, but as an advocate for creative ownership.
