The hit-and-run death of real estate agent and Million Dollar Beach House alum Sara Burack has shocked the Hamptons community and drawn national media attention.

On June 21, the woman accused of fatally striking Burack, Amanda Kempton, appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving a fatality.

“She thought she hit a traffic cone,” Kempton’s lawyer claimed in court, asserting that alcohol is not considered a factor in the incident.

Initial Arrest After Hit-and-Run Death

The alleged hit-and-run occurred at approximately 2:45 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, along Montauk Highway near Villa Paul Restaurant in Southampton. Burack, 40, was found unconscious and later pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Hospital from her injuries.

Kempton, a 32-year-old marine biologist, was arrested on June 20 after a brief manhunt. During the arraignment, prosecutor MacDonald Drane stated that Kempton was seen at a tavern before the crash and argued that her planned travel to Virginia indicated she might flee.
