The news broke early Sunday: US strikes on Iran.  The mission known as Operation Midnight Hammer marked a new and dramatic escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. 

The US used its unique “bunker-busting bombs” to penetrate tunnels in the Fordow site and targeted all the surface infrastructure with Tomahawk missiles.

In a bold move, the United States hit three of Iran’s most secure nuclear sites—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—alongside Israel's broader military campaign, with President Trump claiming they were “completely and fully obliterated.” 

 Areas of US Strikes on Iran

• Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant: Deep underground near Qom, targeted with six to twelve 30,000-pound GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bunker busters dropped by B‑2 stealth bombers. 
• Natanz Nuclear Facility: Hit by two MOPs and approximately 30 submarine-fired Tomahawk cruise missiles. 
• Isfahan Site: Also struck by around 30 Tomahawk missiles, targeting surface infrastructure. 

Pentagon sources describe the mission "Operation Midnight Hammer" as a precision operation aimed solely at nuclear capabilities without targeting regime or troop infrastructure. 

Trump Announces “Spectacular Military Success”

President Trump addressed the nation from the White House, flanked by top administration officials, calling the strikes “a spectacular military success.” He warned of further action:

“There will either be peace or there will be tragedy for Iran… if peace does not come quickly, we will go after those other targets with precision, speed, and skill.”

Trump also proclaimed all aircraft had exited Iranian airspace safely:

“All planes are now outside of Iran airspace… NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE!” 

Iranian and International Reactions

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the strikes as a “heinous act” and warned of “everlasting consequences,” asserting Tehran would retaliate. Iran's ambassador to the UN demanded an emergency meeting to address the act as an illegal use of force.

Despite Iran’s protest, the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed no off-site radiation spikes. 

UN Secretary-General António Guterres voiced alarm:

“There is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly get out of control—with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world.”

The UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer, while supporting non-proliferation, urged restraint. Russia and China criticized the legality of the action, while Iran reportedly coordinated with Moscow following the attack.

Israel Says Operation Midnight Hammer Success

The U.S. strikes followed Israel’s targeted assaults beginning June 13 intended to “systematically eradicate” Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure. American stealth B‑2 bombers and MOP bombs were regarded as essential in penetrating heavily fortified sites like Fordow. 

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu praised the strikes:

“Your bold decision… will change history,” he said. “You have done what no other country on earth could do.”

Escalation Risk

These actions thrust the U.S. directly into a war with Iran. In response, Iran launched over 40 missiles into Israel, and Iranian-backed groups like the Houthis have threatened attacks on U.S. vessels in the Red Sea.

Some U.S. lawmakers, including Senators Sanders and AOC, have criticized the move, raising questions about whether congressional authority is required for such strikes.

Trump, however, reiterated his opposition to ground forces:

“It’s the last thing you want to do.”

Looking Ahead: Peace or Wider Conflict?

The operation’s impact on Iran’s nuclear capabilities is yet to be assessed. Satellite imagery suggests structural damage to Fordow’s tunnels, though Tehran claims underground facilities remain intact.

As of this morning, U.S. forces maintain heightened readiness, with plans in place for diplomatic backchannels to urge Iran to stand down. Vice President Vance has emphasized a path toward diplomacy if Iran stops its assaults.
