The hit-and-run death of real estate agent and Million Dollar Beach House alum Sara Burack has shocked the Hamptons community and drawn national media attention.

On June 21, the woman accused of fatally striking Burack, Amanda Kempton, appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving a fatality.

“She thought she hit a traffic cone,” Kempton’s lawyer claimed in court, asserting that alcohol is not considered a factor in the incident.

Kempton, a 32-year-old marine biologist, was arrested on June 20 after a brief manhunt. During the arraignment, prosecutor MacDonald Drane stated that Kempton was seen at a tavern before the crash and argued that her planned travel to Virginia indicated she might flee.

“She was emotional in court,” the New York Post reported, as the prosecution requested a higher bail.

Despite the severity of the charge—a Class D felony in New York punishable by up to seven years in prison—Kempton was released on $100,000 bail, which her family secured with property collateral.
