T-Mobile Drops DEI Amid FCC Merger Pressure

T-Mobile FCC lawsuit

In a move igniting controversy across political lines, T-Mobile has pledged to terminate its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, a shift aimed at aligning with the Federal Communications Commission’s regulatory expectations as it seeks approval for two blockbuster deals totaling nearly $9 billion.

The decision, revealed in a letter to FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr, comes as T-Mobile awaits green lights for its $4.4 billion acquisition of UScellular’s wireless operations and a $4.9 billion joint venture to absorb fiber provider Metronet.

Regulatory Strategy or Corporate Capitulation?

T-Mobile said the decision followed a “comprehensive review” initially promised during its $950 million deal to buy Lumos, a fiber-to-the-home platform cleared earlier this year. In its letter, T-Mobile claimed the dismantling of DEI initiatives reflects changes in federal law and court rulings, adding it would eliminate DEI “not just in name, but in substance.”

“We recognize the legal and policy landscape surrounding DEI under federal law has changed,” the company wrote, promising to maintain “nondiscrimination and equal employment opportunity” principles without DEI frameworks.

T-Mobile is the second telecom giant to bend to pressure from Commissioner Carr, who successfully pushed Verizon to make a similar move during its Frontier Communications deal earlier this year.

Carr celebrated T-Mobile’s decision as a win for “equal opportunity, nondiscrimination, and the public interest,” posting his remarks on social media Wednesday.

Democrats Fire Back: “Cowardly Corporate Capitulation”

The move, however, drew fierce backlash from Democratic FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez, who lambasted T-Mobile for trading ethics for regulatory favor.

“T-Mobile is making a mockery of its professed commitment to eliminating discrimination,” she said. “In yet another cynical bid to win FCC regulatory approval, they are abandoning principles they once claimed to champion.”

The political flashpoint mirrors growing national tension around DEI programs, intensified by recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions and executive orders from President Donald Trump targeting affirmative action and diversity initiatives.

What’s Changing Inside T-Mobile?

According to the filing, T-Mobile will:

  • Redirect DEI-focused staff toward general “employee culture and engagement.”

  • Remove DEI language from its website.

  • Open all training, mentorship, and hiring initiatives to all employees, regardless of background.

  • Eliminate references to protected characteristics in supplier contracts, law firm partnerships, and vendor deals.

  • Refocus supplier diversity efforts on small businesses, rather than specific demographics.

T-Mobile also clarified that it does not use hiring quotas or goals based on race, sex, or other protected statuses. Any Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) will continue to exist, but without prioritization based on identity or demographic criteria.

Merger Stakes Loom Large

The timing of the DEI decision is critical. T-Mobile has filed this week's letter under both the UScellular and Metronet deal dockets. Approval of these deals would significantly boost T-Mobile’s residential fiber and wireless reach, solidifying its hold over key telecom territories.

The company reiterated that its core values remain rooted in meritocracy, stating:

“Skills, aptitude, and a growth mindset are what contribute to exceptional performance — regardless of who you are or where you’re from.”

T-Mobile did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
