Despite the uproar, Fox News largely avoided airing Trump’s inflammatory comment. The network mentioned Mueller’s death at least six times over the weekend but notably excluded the president’s reaction and the backlash it sparked.

Most references were brief updates rather than in-depth discussions—a striking editorial choice given the network’s years-long focus on Mueller during the Russia investigation.

One of the few extended segments came during a program hosted by Trey Gowdy, where he and Rep. Jim Jordan revisited what they called the “political origins of the Russia collusion hoax.” Trump’s controversial statement, however, was left untouched.

Critics quickly seized on the omission, suggesting the network’s silence spoke volumes.

While Fox largely sidestepped the moment, other outlets amplified the backlash. On CNN, anchor Dana Bash sharply criticized Trump’s words.

“This should be shocking for anyone to say, let alone a president,” Bash said, noting that while such remarks may no longer surprise, they remain deeply troubling.

Even within conservative circles, unease surfaced. Veteran analyst Brit Hume publicly rebuked Trump’s comment, writing that such rhetoric fuels not just opposition, but outright hostility.

The divergence in coverage highlighted a broader pattern: how networks choose when to amplify or mute controversial rhetoric. Although Fox’s website did feature Trump’s quote prominently, its on-air programming avoided repeating the phrase altogether.

Instead, “Fox & Friends” opted to spotlight remarks from George W. Bush, who had appointed Mueller as FBI director and praised his public service—offering a stark tonal contrast to Trump’s reaction.

The network did not respond to requests for comment regarding its editorial decisions.

This is not the first time Fox News has been accused of downplaying Trump’s more contentious remarks. Critics point to previous instances where the network minimized or ignored controversial statements, including comments about filmmaker Rob Reiner and reporting tied to Jeffrey Epstein.

Even Fox host Sean Hannity has occasionally acknowledged discomfort with Trump’s rhetoric, admitting in a recent podcast that there are moments when he questions whether such remarks were necessary.
