“Monster Storm Heads for Remote U.S. Pacific Islands”
A powerful super typhoon is bearing down on remote U.S. islands in the Pacific, triggering urgent warnings, mass closures, and fears of destructive winds, flooding, and extended power outages across the region.

Super Typhoon Sinlaku is closing in on the Northern Mariana Islands with sustained winds reaching 173 mph, making it the strongest storm on Earth so far this year as it approaches Rota, Tinian, and Saipan.

"Super Typhoon Sinlaku is on track to barrel over the Northern Mariana Islands late Tuesday local time with widespread rain and flooding along with destructive winds that could cause lengthy power outages, the National Weather Service said."

Forecasters say the system is expected to pass directly over or very near the three islands, home to roughly 50,000 people, most of them on Saipan.

While slight weakening is forecast, Sinlaku is still expected to remain at Category 4 or 5-equivalent strength as it moves through the region, keeping the threat of catastrophic damage high.

“Record-Strength Winds as Storm Approaches”
The Joint Typhoon Warning Center reported sustained winds of 173 mph on Monday as the system moved closer to Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, underscoring the extreme intensity of the storm.

Guam, a U.S. territory with about 170,000 residents and major American military installations, is not expected to face a direct hit but could still experience damaging winds and heavy rainfall.

“Guam Already Experiencing Dangerous Conditions”
The outer bands of the storm have already begun affecting the region, with Guam seeing heavy rainfall and wind gusts up to 60 mph early Tuesday.

Officials reported widespread business closures, with residents urged to stay indoors as conditions worsened.

“Military and Government on High Alert”
U.S. military officials in Guam, which has previously been hit hard by Typhoon Mawar in 2023, ordered personnel to shelter in place and prepare for severe weather conditions.

The island is strategically significant, with the U.S. military controlling roughly one-third of its land area.

President Donald Trump approved emergency disaster declarations for Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands on Saturday, clearing the way for federal assistance.

Federal Emergency Management Agency teams have since been deployed, with nearly 100 personnel sent along with support from multiple federal agencies.

"We are ready to respond to this event," Robert Fenton, a FEMA regional administrator, said from Guam on Monday afternoon local time.

Officials said FEMA began staging supplies and personnel ahead of the storm, as coordination efforts accelerated across federal departments.

“Widespread Damage Reported Before Main Impact”
Before turning toward Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, the storm caused significant damage in parts of Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia, according to meteorologists.

Residents of Saipan, long accustomed to extreme weather, are once again preparing for a potentially devastating impact.

"We sit in what they call ‘Typhoon Alley,’" said Glen Hunter, a Saipan native, after waking to strong winds and fallen trees.

He explained that many residents live in reinforced concrete homes, while others in weaker housing often seek shelter with relatives or in government facilities.

Saipan is still recovering from Super Typhoon Yutu in 2018, followed by economic setbacks tied to the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving the region especially vulnerable to another major strike.

Hunter warned that recovery from a direct hit could take months or longer due to the islands’ isolation and limited supply routes.

"We’re remote, beautiful islands in the Pacific, which is a plus, but in times of recovery it becomes a massive negative to getting things into our damaged ports, and so what we would hope for is just as much support as we can get from the outside world, the federal government, the military," he said.

“Understanding Super Typhoons”
A super typhoon is the strongest classification of tropical cyclone in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, where some of the world’s most powerful storms form.

These systems are equivalent to Category 4 or 5 hurricanes in the Atlantic, with sustained winds of at least 150 mph. More than 300 super typhoons have been recorded since the designation was introduced nearly 80 years ago.
