A quiet Virginia neighborhood was shattered overnight as a murder-suicide in Fairfax County claimed the lives of a once-prominent political figure and his wife, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions and a family forever altered.

Authorities confirmed that Justin Fairfax fatally shot his wife, Cerina Fairfax, before turning the gun on himself early Thursday morning.

Deadly Incident Unfolds Amid Domestic Turmoil

The violence erupted inside the couple’s home in Annandale, Virginia, where police were summoned shortly after midnight. According to Kevin Davis, officers responded to a 911 call placed by one of the couple’s teenage children.

“Former lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax shot and killed his wife inside of their home and then shot and killed himself,” Davis said during a press briefing.

Investigators say the tragedy unfolded against the backdrop of an ongoing domestic dispute tied to what officials described as a “complicated or messy divorce.”

A Political Career Marked by Rise and Collapse

Fairfax, 47, once stood as a rising force in Virginia politics. Serving as lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022 under Ralph Northam, he became the second African American since Reconstruction to hold statewide office in the state.

But his ascent was derailed in 2019, when two women accused him of sexual assault — allegations that ignited widespread calls for his resignation and cast a long shadow over his career.

Despite attempting a political comeback in 2021, Fairfax secured just 3.54% of the vote in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, finishing fourth.

Tensions Escalated in Days Leading to Shooting

Police revealed that the couple, though in the midst of divorce proceedings, had continued living under the same roof — a situation that may have intensified existing strains.

Davis noted that Fairfax had recently been served legal documents connected to an upcoming court hearing, a development investigators believe may have contributed to the fatal escalation.

The couple’s two teenage children were inside the home at the time of the shooting, authorities said.

Prior Police Call Raises Further Questions

This was not the first time officers had been called to the residence. In January, Fairfax accused his wife of assault, prompting a police response.

However, after reviewing footage captured by in-home cameras installed by Cerina Fairfax, authorities concluded that no assault had taken place.

“The allegation that Mr. Fairfax made in January, that Mrs. Fairfax assaulted him, was proven to be untrue,” Davis said.
