Gann Fire Forces Schools to Close as Smoke Blankets Calaveras County

Some fires announce themselves with flames visible for miles. Others make their presence known first through smoke, drifting into towns and settling over communities like an uninvited guest that refuses to leave. That's exactly the scenario unfolding in Calaveras County, where the Gann Fire has grown large enough to shut down an entire school district and send smoke spilling into a neighboring county.

All Calaveras Unified School District campuses are closed Wednesday as smoke from the blaze continues to blanket communities across the region.

By the Numbers: A Fire Still Growing

Acreage That Adds Up Fast

Cal Fire reported the Northern California wildfire had scorched 9,363 acres with just 10% containment as of late Wednesday morning. To put that into perspective, that's roughly 11 square miles — about three-quarters the size of the entire city of Woodland. It's the kind of figure that turns an abstract wildfire into a tangible, sprawling threat once you map it against something familiar.

Why Schools Went Dark

District officials said the decision to close every school site came after closely monitoring shifting winds, wildfire smoke, and air quality throughout the day Tuesday — a real-time balancing act against conditions that can flip within hours. Officials cautioned that circumstances could change rapidly as winds shift across the county, and the district plans to reassess conditions daily before deciding on school operations for the rest of the week.

Fire Activity Shows Signs of Slowing

Night Crews Hold the Line

Fire activity eased somewhat Tuesday evening, officials reported, giving crews a brief window to regroup. Night-flying helicopters supported ground teams overnight following a firing operation along the blaze's western edge — a tactical maneuver aimed at starving the fire of fuel before it could push further. Wednesday morning's update marked the first time officials released containment figures since the fire ignited, a small but meaningful milestone in an otherwise unpredictable situation.

How It All Started

The wildfire broke out Monday evening near Hogan Dam and Gann roads, southeast of New Hogan Lake. Its cause remains under investigation, though officials point to a familiar combination of contributing factors: scorching temperatures, parched vegetation, rugged terrain, and light winds — the same recipe that has fueled countless Western wildfires in recent years.

As of Tuesday evening, no injuries or structure damage had been reported, a small silver lining amid the fire's rapid spread.

Smoke Knows No County Lines

The fire's reach has already extended beyond Calaveras County's borders. Smoke has drifted into neighboring Amador County, prompting officials there to warn residents of potentially poor air quality — a reminder that wildfire smoke rarely respects jurisdictional boundaries, spreading wherever the wind decides to carry it.

Who's Being Told to Leave

Evacuation Orders Still Active

Evacuation orders remain in effect for several zones, including CCU-109, CCU-110, CCU-130-B, CCU-139, CCU-140 and CCU-147, as fire officials continue working to contain the blaze's spread.

Warnings for Those on the Edge

Evacuation warnings — a step below mandatory orders but still a serious signal to prepare — are in place for zones CCU-111, CCU-131, CCU-148 and CCU-153. Officials are specifically urging residents who may need extra time to evacuate, along with those managing pets or livestock, to leave sooner rather than later, before conditions potentially worsen.

Mapping the Danger Zone

The affected area stretches from the northeastern side of New Hogan Lake to just west of San Andreas, reaching east toward the Calaveras County Airport, south toward Salt Spring Valley Reservoir, and just west of Angels Camp — a wide swath of terrain that underscores just how far the fire's influence has spread beyond its origin point.

Where Evacuees Can Find Shelter

For displaced residents, an evacuation shelter has opened at the Valley Springs Veterans Memorial, located at 189 Pine Street, which is accepting small pets alongside human evacuees. For those with larger animals, a separate shelter is available at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp, ensuring livestock owners aren't forced to choose between their own safety and their animals'.

What Comes Next

With containment still sitting at just 10% and shifting winds capable of upending progress overnight, Calaveras County residents face an uncertain few days ahead. School closures, evacuation zones, and air quality warnings are all likely to remain fluid as fire crews continue their push against the blaze — and as the entire county watches the skies for smoke that refuses to clear.
