Elizabeth Holmes must have zero contact with her victims — no calls, no letters, no cousin dropping off a message on her behalf — unless, upon her release, she is permitted to do so by her parole officer. Break that rule, and she's back behind bars. It's a strange kind of freedom, the kind where the terms of your release are longer than most people's leases.

The debt hanging over her hasn't shrunk. Holmes owes $452 million, split among a dozen or so victims who trusted Theranos with their money and got nothing to show for it but lawsuits and headlines. Rupert Murdoch tops the list at $125 million — a rounding error for a 95-year-old billionaire, maybe, but he still calls himself one of the "old men taken in by a seemingly great young woman."

Walgreens is out $40 million. Safeway is short more than $14 million. And then there's Alan Eisenman, a retired Texas financial planner who isn't a billionaire and isn't rounding anything off. He and his wife Sherrie put $1.2 million into Theranos back in 2006. They're still owed nearly $150,000 of it, and they haven't collected a dollar. "She was a liar back in 2006 and she's a liar today," Eisenman said.

Here's where it gets interesting. Holmes is now the subject of ‘You Can See Everything,’ Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim's documentary that A24 is putting in theaters next month. The film followed her for three years — starting in the weeks before she reported to prison. Nobody involved has said publicly whether Holmes was paid to participate, and A24 hasn't disclosed a figure. But paying documentary subjects has quietly become normal business in the industry over the last few years — this is the same landscape where a producer will hand a subject a licensing fee for their life rights before a single frame gets shot.

If Holmes got paid anything for this project, or gets a cut down the line from streaming or distribution, that money doesn't just land in her checking account and stay there.

Federal restitution doesn't care where the money came from. If a check shows up from a film production, a book deal, or a relative trying to help her get back on her feet, prosecutors can intercept it. That's the mechanism: garnishment applies to earnings, and it applies to windfalls too. Even goodwill gestures from friends and family aren't necessarily safe from the government's hand — if it looks like income or an asset she can tap, it can get redirected toward the people she owes. So if Holmes is banking on a documentary payday to fund a fresh start, the fresh start comes after Uncle Sam and 14 angry investors take their cut first.

Her supervision terms make sure nothing slips through unnoticed. She has to give her parole officer access to her financial records and submit to credit checks — no hiding a payment in an account nobody's watching. She also has to complete a mental health treatment program, get her DNA collected, and allow her home and property to be searched.

The timeline: Holmes moves to a halfway house in August 2027, with an official release date of February 22, 2030. She's also asked for a commutation of her sentence, which is still pending — a long shot, but not off the table.
