Trump’s Cabinet Secretly Meets at Camp David as Iran Deal Stalls and a Saudi-Houthi Showdown in Yemen Looms Over Global Oil Routes

CAMP DAVID, Md. — The Trump administration's top national security officials gathered at Camp David on Friday for an unannounced meeting on Iran and the widening conflict in Yemen, according to a report published October 3, as nuclear negotiations with Tehran stall and Washington weighs whether to resume major military operations.

The White House offered no official comment on the gathering. But according to the account, Vice President JD Vance chaired the session, joined by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine and special envoy Steve Witkoff. One attendee reportedly said that "things were decided or at least deeply discussed."

Iran Talks Stall, Military Options Back on the Table

At the center of the meeting was Iran. According to the report, the administration is now considering a return to major military operations as the nuclear negotiations fail to produce a deal. The Camp David session comes as Washington continues to reference "Operation Epic Fury," the campaign President Donald Trump has said set back Iran's nuclear ambitions; USA Herald has reported that Trump warned Tehran was weeks from a nuclear weapon.

The president's public stance has been blunt. Trump has stated: "Either Iran signs the deal, or it won't exist any longer." That sentence, attributed to the president in the reporting, signals how little room the White House says it sees for a prolonged diplomatic stalemate.

Officials have not announced any decision, and the White House has not confirmed that the Camp David meeting produced a specific order. But the presence of the Joint Chiefs chairman and the CIA director alongside the nation's diplomats suggests that military and intelligence planning were on the agenda alongside negotiations.

The Yemen Front: Saudi Arabia Prepares a Counteroffensive

The second major topic was Yemen, where Saudi Arabia is reportedly preparing a counteroffensive against Houthi forces near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a narrow chokepoint that carries a significant share of the world's seaborne oil and commercial cargo between the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.

According to the report, the United States has twice declined to take part directly in military operations there, but could reconsider if the Saudi effort falters. In the meantime, Washington is sharing intelligence with Riyadh, including information on more than 200 Houthi targets.

Other regional powers are also involved. Turkey and Pakistan are reportedly supplying military equipment to Saudi forces, with Pakistani advisers on the ground and an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 Pakistani troops defending Saudi borders. The picture is of a regional coalition forming around Saudi Arabia, with the United States positioned as an intelligence partner for now rather than a combatant.

Why It Matters to Americans

The stakes extend well beyond the Middle East. Bab al-Mandeb is a critical artery for global energy and trade, and any prolonged disruption there can ripple into the price of fuel and consumer goods in American communities. Energy costs are already a political flashpoint: on the campaign trail, Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson said Iowans "shouldn't have to foot the bill at the pump or the checkout line for the war in Iran."

The timing is also notable. With the midterm elections roughly one month away, Republicans are worried about declining support, and the Cook Political Report has shifted Senate races in Kansas and South Carolina toward Democrats. Trump has acknowledged the conflict could potentially cost Republicans at the ballot box. A renewed escalation with Iran, or a U.S. entanglement in Yemen, would carry major political and economic consequences just as voters head to the polls.

Congress and the Question of War Powers

Any resumption of large-scale strikes will also revive a familiar constitutional debate over whether the president needs congressional authorization. Lawmakers in both parties have raised questions about the scope of the Iran campaign, and a decision to expand operations, or to deploy forces in Yemen, would likely draw fresh demands for hearings and votes when Congress returns to its fall agenda.

Critics of the administration argue that the White House is drifting toward another open-ended Middle East commitment. Supporters counter that a credible threat of force is the only way to compel Tehran to accept verifiable limits on its nuclear program, and that backing Saudi Arabia with intelligence rather than troops is a measured approach.

What to Watch Next

Several developments will indicate where this goes. First, whether the White House publicly confirms the meeting or announces any change in posture toward Iran. Second, whether Saudi Arabia launches its Houthi offensive and how it fares, since the reporting indicates a Saudi setback could change Washington's calculus. Third, whether talks with Tehran resume or collapse entirely. And finally, how oil markets and gasoline prices react, because that is where geopolitics reaches American households fastest.

For now, the Camp David meeting underscores that the administration is preparing on two fronts at once, with diplomacy running out of runway in Iran and a regional war intensifying in Yemen. Details remain thin, and much of what is known comes from a single account of a closed-door session. USA Herald will continue to follow the story as officials say more.

This article is based on reporting from La Voce di New York, The Hill and other published accounts. Details have not been independently confirmed by the White House.
