Accusations Against the FBI Fall Flat

Democrat and Republican lawmakers received classified information Thursday. The meeting was about the ongoing FBI investigation. The case seeks to prove whether Russia assisted Trump in the Presidential election. Partisan claims that the bureau spied on Trump’s presidential campaign prompted the meeting.

No Evidence

Democrats came out from the meeting unimpressed. They said that they didn’t see any evidence to support Republican claims. They say there’s no evidence that the FBI acted wrongly. But they expressed slight concern because a White House lawyer was present at Thursday’s briefings. Mitch McConnell is the Senate Majority Leader. He told Fox News that he didn’t learn anything that particularly surprised him. He declined to go into details though.

Gaining Attention

These unusual meetings drew attention to the claims of FBI political bias and misconduct. Still, those claims were not proved. The White House arranged the meeting at the request of Trump’s allies from the GOP. The President tried to foster suspicion about the legitimacy of the FBI’s investigation. Initially, only Republicans were invited to the meeting. This briefing was the latest stagecraft meant to support his allegations. However, they also proved to what degree the President and his allies ready to use the power of the federal government to help Trump’s political and personal defense.

Unpleasant Presence?

Senator Mark Warner posted a tweet after the meeting. He stated that the President’s attorney and Chief of Staff shouldn’t have been at the meeting. He thinks that they had no reason to show up at the meeting in a criminal investigation about Trump’s campaign.
